It's Almost the Weekend! What Will You See?

"2 Guns" arrives in theaters on Friday, August 2. Two men try to bring down a dangerous drug cartel, but when the mission goes horribly wrong, they both flee for their lives. As it turns out, Bobby and Stig have some things in common. They're both working undercover, and they're both in trouble. Baltasar Kormakur directs. The R rating is due to language, brief nudity, and violence.

"The Smurfs 2" is a sequel to "The Smurfs" (2011), directed by Raja Gosnell. Smurfette's birthday is approaching, but she's not in the mood to celebrate. Feeling lonely, Smurfette decides to strike out on her own. Unfortunately, Gargamel is just waiting to make his move and steal the Smurfs' secrets. His new minions are ready to lure Smurfette and her friends right into trouble. Rude humor and some action contribute to a PG rating.

"The Spectacular Now" is a comedic drama about opposites attracting, opening in select theaters. While Sutter is a partier with no plans for the future, Aimee is a clever introvert who dreams of escaping the present. As the two unlikely friends develop deeper feelings, both of them have to reconsider what they want from life. James Ponsoldt directs. The R rating is due to alcohol use, language, and mature content, all of which involve teens.

"The Canyons" stars Lindsay Lohan as Tara, a woman whose heart is torn between two different men. One of them is her volatile producer boyfriend, while the other is the handsome star of her boyfriend's latest film project. As jealousies and infidelities spiral out of control, Tara realizes she is in too deep. The thriller is directed by Paul Schrader. The film is not yet rated.

"Drift" takes place in Australia, in the early 1970s. Two ambitious brothers in a coastal town stir up both ire and interest after they start a surf-related business. When an out-of-town surfer comes to their aid, the brothers redouble their efforts, helping to form a greater future for the sport of surfing. Ben Nott and Morgan O'Neill direct. Language and drug content contribute to the R rating.

"Europa Report" is a sci-fi film about a doomed crew of astronauts. During a voyage to one of Jupiter's moons, the six explorers run into unforeseen trouble. After reaching Europa, the crew does in fact make contact with alien life. However, the consequences are far more dangerous and more terrifying than they expected. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to sci-fi peril and action sequences. Sebastian Cordero directs.

Continuing Films

"The Wolverine" is the latest film about Marvel's enigmatic hero. After Wolverine receives a summons to Japan, he learns that a powerful man named Yashida still owes him a life debt. It turns out Yashida is less interested in repaying his debt than in taking something from Wolverine. The mutant will have to fight for something he wasn't even sure he wanted. The film has a PG-13 rating for mature content, language, and intense sci-fi action and violence. James Mangold directs.

"The Conjuring" stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as a pair of talented paranormal investigators. Though they make their living exploring unusual phenomena, nothing can prepare the investigators for the hostility and maliciousness of the spirits in a rambling Rhode Island farmhouse. But they know that a family's survival rests squarely on their shoulders. James Wan's suspenseful horror film has an R rating for disturbing terror and violence.

In "Despicable Me 2," Gru is a reformed man. No longer interested in his villainous ways, he wants to produce jellies and jams and enjoy watching his three lively and smart daughters grow up. But a mysterious woman from the Anti-Villain League may have the ability to change Gru's priorities, in more ways than one. Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud direct. "Despicable Me 2" has a PG rating for rude humor and mild action.

"Turbo" is a family-friendly animated movie from director David Soren. Turbo is just another garden snail, except that he dreams of a life much larger than his slow-paced reality. When an accident gives Turbo the power and speed he craves, he decides to pursue his ambitions of becoming an Indy 500 champion. As Turbo learns, though, dreams take heart and dedication. The PG rating is due to mild action and thematic elements.

"Grown Ups 2" is a hilarious sequel to "Grown Ups" (2010) from Dennis Dugan. After Lenny and his family return to Lenny's hometown, they discover that small-town life is not always what the movies make it out to be. Even while Lenny reconnects with his old pals, he realizes that life is not going to be exactly the same as when he was a boy. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to crude and suggestive content, male rear nudity, and language.
