The 2010 Golden Globes offered a nice look at what is to come as the TV and film awards season carries on. Many consider winners of the Globes to be in prime position for a victory at the Academy Awards. This Golden Globes Winners List highlights the best of TV and film over the last year including movies, shows, actors, and filmmakers.
This 2010 Golden Globe Winners List will be updated throughout the show, which begins at 8PM ET on NBC tonight (January 17). See our Golden Globe predictions which will be recapped after the show is over.
Introduction
The Golden Globes got off to a rainy start much to the dismay of celebrities walking in on the red carpet. There were lots of umbrellas out to cover hairdos and dresses. Host Ricky Gervais is kicking things off with his monologue with, of course, a run of jokes comparing his British version of “The Office” with Steve Carell’s US version. He has also poked fun at the actors for their plastic surgery and heightened sense of self-worth. Finally, a necessary Jay Leno crack. Follow our Golden Globe updates all night and let the awards begin …

• Marvin Hamlisch, The Informant!
• James Horner, Avatar
• Abel Korzeniowski, A Single Man

BEST MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Georgia O’Keefe
• Grey Gardens
• Into the Storm
• Little Dorrit
• Taking Chance
Note: Grey Gardens had too good of a cast and story to not win… maybe more individual awards to come. Like Amy Adams who helped deliver award. 7 for 9. First major music playoff as the cast took their time with acknowledgments. Correct Pick

• Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
• Marion Cotillard, Nine
• Julia Roberts, Duplicity
• Meryl Streep, It’s Complicated
• Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

• Kevin Bacon, Taking Chance
• Kenneth Branagh, Wallander: One Step Behind

• Joan Allen, Georgia O’Keefe
• Drew Barrymore, Grey Gardens
• Jessica Lange, Grey Gardens
• Anna Paquin, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler

Note: Fast turnaround as best miniseries actress goes to Drew Barrymore in an upset over Grey Gardens co-star Jessica Lange – right movie, wrong actress. Expect a zany speech. 8 for 12. Incorrect Pick

• Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, District 9
• Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker
• Nancy Meyers, It’s Complicated
• Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air

Note: Jennifer Aniston and the guy from 300 deliver Best Motion Picture Screenplay award. Tough category to predict and need a win to get back on track. Oh well, my second pick won. 8 for 13. Incorrect Pick

• Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
• Steve Carell, The Office
• David Duchovny, Californication
• Thomas Jane, Hung
• Matthew Morrison, Glee
Note: Nice award presentation team with Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner. Alec Baldwin wins. Another tough category to pick and another loss – four straight after an 8 for 10 start. Baldwin wasn’t there to give speech as he is at a charity event. 8 for 14. Incorrect Pick
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
• Baaria (Italy)
• Broken Embraces (Spain)
• The Maid (Chile)
• A Prophet (France)
• The White Ribbon (Germany)
Note: Sophia Lauren, 78, delivered the foreign language film, which makes sense. Back on the winning track with The White Ribbon. Show must be behind as music started quickly on his speech. 9 for 15. Correct Pick
BEST TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
• Big Love
• Dexter
• House
• Mad Men
• True Blood
Note: Wanted Dexter but not surprised that the new hit show Mad Men wins for best TV drama series. Another bad pick… tough going lately. Again with the fast music… speed things up at the beginning. 9 for 16. Incorrect Pick
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Jane Adams, Hung
• Rose Byrne, Damages
• Jane Lynch, Glee
• Janet McTeer, Into the Storm
• Chloë Sevigny, Big Love
Note: This one seemed like an easy pick. Glad Sevigny won as she is a very talented actress and a major factor in Big Love’s success. 10 for 17. Correct Pick
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
• Matt Damon, Invictus
• Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
• Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
• Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
• Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Note: Not sure what the logic was with Tucci. Waltz was the obvious choice as the Critics Choice winner but went for the upset here. Waltz was great though. Nice, humble speech. 10 for 18. Incorrect Pick
Update: Cecil B. Demille Award given to Martin Scorsese by Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio, who have appeared in multiple Scorsese films. Hoffman was very poignant and humorous and DiCaprio called Scorsese his “good friend and mentor”, a “master filmmaker”, and a “good, patient teacher”. A nice montage showing top scenes of Scorsese films was followed by a relatively brief acceptance speech by Scorsese.
BEST DIRECTOR
• Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
• James Cameron, Avatar
• Clint Eastwood, Invictus
• Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
• Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
Note: Gervais makes a funny joke leading into Mel Gibson’s introduction of the Best Direction – Motion Picture Award. Went against my first instinct (Avatar) and keep thinking Tarantino wins something. 10 for 19. Incorrect Pick
BEST TELEVISION SERIES, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• 30 Rock
• Entourage
• Glee
• Modern Family
• The Office
Note: Feel good about this pick (maybe because of a long streak of misses). Good new show beats out some mainstays like 30 Rock. 11 for 20. Correct Pick
Update: The guys (including Mike Tyson) from The Hangover come out to present the next nominee for Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical – The Hangover.
BEST MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• (500) Days of Summer
• The Hangover
• It’s Complicated
• Julie & Julia
• Nine
Note: This was a very competitive award presented by Reese Witherspoon. Another pick to feel good about. 12 for 21. Correct Pick
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
• Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
• Helen Mirren, The Last Station
• Carey Mulligan, An Education
• Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Note: Mickey Rourke, complete with cowboy hat, presents to Sandra Bullock - 3 correct picks in a row! Competitive category. Bullock seems quite ‘normal’ compared to some of the other actor/actress speakers. 13 for 22. Correct Pick
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• Matt Damon, The Informant!
• Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
• Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes
• Joseph Gordon-Levitt, (500) Days of Summer
• Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
Note: Surprise, surprise. Downey Jr. takes out Day-Lewis. Really thought this was a given. Levitt was actually quite solid in a nice romantic comedy, but he seemed out of place on this list. Downey is funny and quick-witted. 13 for 23. Incorrect Pick
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
• George Clooney, Up in the Air
• Colin Firth, A Single Man
• Morgan Freeman, Invictus
• Tobey Maguire, Brothers
Note: Very tough pick on this one. Wanted to go with Clooney, but will admit I relied on the Critics Choice Awards for this one. Kate Winslett presented to Jeff Bridges. Yeah for being conventional and sensible… should have done that a couple times before. Nice standing ovation followed by a nice speech – thanked his wife first and also mentioned his stand in who he’s done over 60 films with! 14 for 24. Correct Pick
BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Avatar
• The Hurt Locker
• Inglourious Basterds
• Precious
• Up in the Air
Note: Julia Roberts gets to present the biggest and final Globe of the night for Best Motion Picture – Drama. She’s too serious too tell jokes on stage. Seems like an easy pick with Avatar at this point given the way the night has gone. And there you have it – maybe the easiest call of the night. Finished a respectable 15 for 25. Correct Pick
Golden Globes Recap
Satisfied with my Golden Globe predictions as I was 15 of 25 (60%). A couple more conventional picks and it would have been better.
As usual, the Golden Globe Awards was full of intrigue, reveals, and some great humor. Ricky Gervais ranks up there as one of the best awards show hosts ever – no fear in his humor. It will be interesting to see whether the Globes is a forecast of what is to come with the February Oscars. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some changes in a few categories that were closely contested.
Arguably the biggest surprise was the Robert Downey Jr. win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Daniel Day-Lewis was the conventional pick. Avatar was a big winner as expected. Tarantino and Inglourious Basterds had a bad night with just the Waltz win. Very happy to see Dexter’s Hall and Lithgow win – great show! Otherwise, the wealth was spread fairly well. No other majorly dominating films.
