Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

-- "42" hit a home run at the box office during its debut weekend. The biopic earned $27,250,000 during the weekend of April 12. In the 1940s, Jackie Robinson is poised to become the next great baseball legend. However, his journey to the top will not be easy. Robinson is an African-American man in a country that still boils with racial tensions and controversies. Despite the many drawbacks he faces, however, Robinson perseveres, forever changing the face of an all-American sport. The PG-13 rating is due to thematic elements that include language.

"Scary Movie 5" provided enough scares and laughs to land in second place, with box office profits of $15,153,000. After a young couple brings home their first baby, they notice that all kinds of strange things are happening around their formerly peaceful home. To make matters even more complicated, Jody is struggling with her position as a prima ballerina, while Dan faces issues during his job as a primate researcher. The irreverent comedy has a PG-13 rating for crude and mature content, partial nudity, comic violence, gore, drug content, and language.

Continuing Films

"The Croods" maintained a healthy presence at the box office. Earnings of $13,200,000 bring total profits to more than $142 million. Eep longs to explore the world around her, but her anxious father warns her to always stay close to home. After she meets Guy, a new friend who seems especially evolved, Eep is more eager than ever to see the sights. She may get her wish sooner than she suspects. The PG rating is due to some scary action sequences.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" earned $10,800,000 during the weekend. Since its debut, the action-packed film has made more than $102 million. With the G.I. Joe team facing false charges and open hostility, they know they have to clear their good name. It is not just a matter of pride. If the warriors want to defeat Cobra, they will have to overcome the false accusations. The film has an PG-13 rating for martial arts action sequences, combat violence, brief sensuality, and language.

"Evil Dead" brought in $9,500,000, with overall profits now hitting over $41 million. Five friends accidentally connect with evil forces, resulting in a bloodbath unlike anything they have ever imagined. Since they are in an isolated cabin in the woods, the friends cannot reach the outside world for help. As the gore and violence reaches new levels, the five realize there may only be one survivor. Mature content, language, and intense bloody violence and gore contribute to an R rating.

So far, "Jurassic Park 3D" has brought in more than $31 million during its rerelease. This weekend, the prehistoric hit earned $8,820,000. With his investors growing restless, eccentric genius John Hammond invites an exclusive group of experts to his up-and-coming theme park. He also invites his grandchildren. As it turns out, the theme park is a breeding ground for dangerous dinosaurs. When the guests end up stranded, it becomes an unexpected fight for survival. The film has a PG-13 rating for intense sci-fi terror.

"Olympus Has Fallen" saw profits of $7,283,000. The film has earned more than $81 million so far. With the President of the United States desperate to escape a terrorist attack, one man knows that he has the knowledge and skills to save the country. The only problem is that this former guard already feels guilt over a past mistake, and is terrified to make a second one. "Olympus Has Fallen" has an R rating for language and violence.

"Oz the Great and Powerful" has earned more than $219 million overall. The film earned $4,923,000 over the weekend. Oscar finds himself in a strange new world. It seems that prophecies have predicted his arrival, but not everybody is so sure that Oscar is really a hero. The movie's PG rating is due to scary images, action sequences, and mild language.

Movies to DVD

"Django Unchained" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, April 16. Quentin Tarantino's slick revenge fantasy received nominations for several Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. When Django has his freedom bought for him by an eccentric bounty hunter, he only has one goal. He wants to free his wife from a cruel slave-owner. First, however, Django will have to learn the ways of the bounty hunter. The film has an R rating for strong graphic violence, language, nudity, and a vicious fight.

"The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia" centers on a Georgia family whose lives begin to fall apart after they start having supernatural encounters. As they slowly unravel the mystery surrounding their home, they realize that the haunting has dark and disturbing roots. The horror sequel has an R rating for disturbing horror content.
