A Plumm Summer hits stores on May 5th with the DVD release of the Caroline Zelder film, narrated by Jeff Daniels, and inspired by a true story. The innocence of a small town is ripped apart when famous TV puppet Froggy Doo is kidnapped and held for ransom. Two brothers, teenager Elliott (Chris Massoglia) and his younger brother Rocky (Owen Pearce), team up with the new girl, Haley (Morgan Flynn), to do what the FBI can’t – unlock the mystery of the missing Froggy Doo.
Happy Herb (Henry Winkler) is the childlike adult behind every kids favorite puppet. His life has been dedicated to bring fun to the local children through the Froggy Doo TV show. His life is turned upside down when his best friend, and puppet, is lost.
So is A Plumm Summer really the story of the search for a missing puppet? No. There are of course some underlying issues that play out over the course of the movie. One is the friendship that grows between the brothers and Haley. Elliott and Rocky grow closer throughout the story. Perhaps the most dramatic portion of the film is the severed relationship between the boys’ alcoholic and irresponsible father (William Baldwin), and his family. As the search for Froggy Doo carries on, the troubles at home intensify.
A Plumm Summer is a clever and entertaining family movie. There are some moments of slight language and mature themes, which produce the PG-rating. However, there is a heartwarming and dramatic tale blended with an odd search for a missing puppet. The overall family friendliness is evidenced by approval from both the Dove Foundation and the Parents Television Council. It is brilliantly movie making.
A great cast of younger actors helps make A Plumm Summer a success. Particularly enjoyable is Owen Pearce, whose character delivers many of the funny moments in the movie. He is the most adorable child actor since Jerry Maguire’s Jonathan Lipnicki. Chris Massoglia is solid as the confused teen. The beautiful Lisa Guerrero (TVs “Sunset Beach”) is also effective as the mom.
