Elijah Wood: Filming The Hobbit was a gift
The first of three films based on an adaptation of the 1937 novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. It will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. Several actors from The Lord of the Rings will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood & Orlando Bloom. Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
Elijah Wood found it a ''gift'' to go back to his 'Lords of the Rings' set to film 'The Hobbit'.
The 31-year-old actor was delighted to be able to return to Hobbiton on New Zealand's South Island to reprise his role of Frodo Baggins in the forthcoming two-part prequel to the 'Lord of the Rings' franchise because he was able to reflect on his life 12 years on from filming the original series.
He said: ''It was a gift to go back and return. I was in Hobbiton again, for the first time in 11 years. I turned 19 in Hobbiton. I'm 31 now. That put a lot of things into perspective. It was beautiful. It was just beautiful to go back.''
While Elijah enjoyed his time catching up with crew members and friends in the country, he would've liked to have stayed longer and had an even bigger part in the movie.
In an interview with Collider, he added: ''It was too short. My involvement is so small I only worked a small amount when I was there. I was there for a month, and the majority of my time was just going to set every day and meeting a lot of the new cast members and catching up with old friends and being in Wellington again.
''It feels like home, and those people feel like extended family to me. It was such a treat to go back. It was awesome!''
'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' and 'The Hobbit: There And Back Again' also star Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis, with the movies set to be released in December 2012 and 2013 respectively.
