Samantha Barks has won the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper's 'Les Miserables'.

The actress - who played the character on the London stage in 2010 - will join an all-star cast including Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway in the eagerly anticipated musical, which begins filming shortly.

It was previously thought country singer Taylor Swift may be playing the role of the unlucky-in-love teenager, but producer Cameron Mackintosh confirmed on stage in Manchester Samantha had the part.

Other stars of the film include Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfriend and Aaron Tveit.

It will be the first movie role for Samantha, who initially came to fame on TV competition 'I'd Do Anything', which was looking for a young woman to play the part of Nancy in musical 'Oliver!'.

The picture is the first one for Tom Hooper since he won the Academy Award for Best Director for 'The King's Speech', starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush, and it is expected to be released on January 11, 2013.
