It’s looking more and more like Marvel’s newest Netflix series, The Punisher, will be filming a lot earlier than fans initially anticipated. There had been rumors that it would land on Netflix in 2017 instead of 2018, and with casting news already cropping up, that might be a possibility.

TV Line was the first to report that Ben Barnes has been cast in a role in the Daredevil spinoff series. While the site doesn’t have any confirmation as to who he will play, the running rumor is that he’ll be playing an enemy of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, possibly Bobby Saint.

Bobby Saint has appeared in one of the previous Punisher movies as an organized crime player, back before Marvel got the rights to the character back. The character wasn’t a comic book character before his movie appearance, which would make an interesting change of pace for the Netflix show. All of the previous Marvel Netflix shows have utilized existing comic book characters and put their own spin on them. Considering that Frank Castle spends most of his storylines taking on mobsters and gang members instead of costumed supervillains, the decision might make sense though.

It looks like the role of the techno-savvy Microchip is still up for grabs if that rumor turns out to be true.

Audiences will recognize Barnes primarily for his fantasy films like The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, where he played the title character. Up next for the actor is the HBO series Westworld, inspired by the Michael Crichton story of the same name. He’ll share the screen with Marvel alum Anthony Hopkins and Tessa Thompson, who have been spending the last few months working on Thor: Ragnarok.

Up next for Marvel’s Netflix slate is Luke Cage, which lands on the streaming site September 30. Iron Fist, which is currently filming, will premiere in 2017. The Defenders is set to film later this year for a 2017 debut as well.
