Jon Bernthal, who made his Marvel debut as Frank Castle AKA the Punisher in season two of Daredevil was supposed to attend New York Comic Con this October. The convention just made an announcement that he’ll be unable to attend though due to his Netflix commitments. The news has fans scrambling to find out just what it is he’s filming since, as far as anyone knows, The Punisher spinoff series won’t head into production until 2017.

Originally scheduled to appear at the convention during the week as well as on the weekend, Bernthal will now only be signing autographs and available for photo ops on Saturday and Sunday.

NYCC runs October 6 through 9 and there will be a few Marvel folks in attendance. Producers and select cast members from Agents of SHIELD will be there to debut a new episode and the cast of Iron Fist will also make their NYCC debut. Frequent Agents of SHIELD guest star J. August Richards will also have his own panel.

Bernthal wasn’t expected to be part of either of the Marvel television panels since his character, as far as we know, isn’t involved in either Iron Fist or Agents of SHIELD, but with him apparently filming Thursday and Friday and unable to attend the convention, fans have started speculating about what he could be involved in.

Despite NYCC representatives noting that it’s Bernthal’s Netflix schedule preventing him from attending, some have already started the rumor that he’ll appear on Agents of SHIELD, providing the ABC series with its first real crossover with the Netflix shows. This idea sparked because, as noted in our Agents of SHIELD season premiere review, there were a pair of Marvel comics heavy weights at the premiere of Agents of SHIELD. The duo happened to have a hand in bringing the Punisher to life, but they also worked together on Johnny Blaze, one version of the Ghost Rider character, and they also collaborated on the character Werewolf by Night. Either of those, especially with the series diving into the magical and mystical this season, could be appearing on the show instead of Punisher stopping by.

While we haven’t heard any official word on Bernthal’s involvement, it’s also important to note that The Defenders heads into production this fall. The Defenders will unite all four of Marvel’s Netflix heroes in an event series. It’s entirely possible that fans could see Frank Castle there before his solo series debuts on Netflix.

Of course, there’s also the chance that The Punisher is heading into production much earlier than anyone thought. While Marvel and Netflix have, so far, always filmed one of the Marvel shows at a time, it’s entirely possible that The Punisher could head into production right around the same time as The Defenders. Casting is already well underway as the producers have fund Ben Barnes for the role of a rumored villain and they’re currently on the lookout for someone to play Microchip.

What do you think? Could we be seeing the Punisher pop up in another Marvel show? Or is The Punisher heading into production earlier than anyone thought?

Until we find out, there’s plenty more Marvel to enjoy. Agents of SHIELD is currently airing its fourth season on Tuesdays at 10PM on ABC and the first season of Luke Cage will be available to stream in its entirety starting September 30 on Netflix.
