New 'Logan' Clip Shows Harsh Life Of X-23
While Logan is built around saying goodbye to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, it is also an introduction to next generation mutant X-23. In the film's latest promotional clip, a glimpse is shown of the young girl's life as a captive experiment before she breaks free and finds safety with Logan and Charles Xavier.
X-23, a.k.a. Laura, is at the mercy of her doctors before being led back to her cell, where she is seen taking drastic measures that might require a trigger warning for some viewers.
This kind of dark, desperate act from Laura further reflects the dark and brutal direction of Logan as a whole. In fact, it might be material like that which helped make 20th Century Fox so nervous about the tone in the first place, as studio chairman Stacey Snider recently admitted.
At a Q&A in California, Snider claimed to Variety "there was real consternation about the intensity of the tone of the film." While Deadpool already proved to Fox that R-rated superhero movies could be huge, Logan is clearly far less cartoonish as it moves away from the "wise-cracking cigar-chomping mutton-sporting Wolverine" as Snider put it.
But ultimately, Snider's colleagues conceded another film with that Wolverine would be "freakin’ boring" although it took them 16 years to figure that out. Instead, Snider said the excitement of Logan comes from "Wolverine as a real guy and he’s world-weary and he doesn’t want to fight anymore until a little girl needs him."
Although the new clip makes it all too clear why Laura needs saving, it still says something that she obviously finds her own way out of her prison before meeting Logan. But taking on the world alone, not to mention Boyd Holbrook's part-robot soldier and Richard E. Grant's mad scientist, isn't something that Laura or Logan can do for much longer.
All of this is more of a Western and an "elegy about life and death" according to Snider, which certainly can't be said about most superhero films. Whether the risk was worth it or whether the doubters at Fox were right all along, Logan will prove at least one side right starting on March 3.
