We’ve seen pictures of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman in Supergirl but on Monday we got our first look at the new Man of Steel in action.

The CW (via Entertainment Weekly) released the first clip from the season 2 premiere, and it reveals quite a bit of the new Supes, and his alter ego Clark Kent as he helps his cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) safely land a plummeting spacecraft.

Hoechlin plays Kent in a similar stumbling, nerdy fashion as Christopher Reeve did in the beloved theatrical version of the superhero.

When he says to Perry White on the phone that his use of the phrase “Great Caesar’s Ghost” is a “bit of a throwback,” you have to wonder if that is a wink to the audience that Hoechlin’s Superman is more old-school than that of the new, brooding Man of Steel of the DCEU.

It’s not surprising seeing as the last time we saw Superman on TV it was in the series finale of Smallville in 2011. In that instance, Tom Welling’s Clark Kent finally takes on the role of Superman (ripping open his shirt in the final scene) and alters his mannerisms of Kent to fit that of a bumbling, yet competent, reporter.

Based on the clip, Hoechlin has the dual-identity thing down pat. Supergirl season 2 premieres Monday, October 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
