Title: The Characters of "The Avengers: Age of Ultron"

When "The Avengers" came out in the summer of 2012, it immediately became the number one movie all across the world, staying that way for many weeks until it became one of the top-grossing movies of all time. The sequel, "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," promises to be a bigger smash hit, featuring a cast even more impressive than that of the first. All of the main characters of the original movie return, with several new heroes and villains joining the fray.

Characters Returning From "The Avengers"

Iron Man

Robert Downey, Jr. returns as Tony Stark, the lovable playboy-cum-superhero. Tony dons a special suit which allows him to fly faster than a jet and shoot energy blasts and rockets to destroy his foes. Stark is one of the most intelligent men on the planet, but he is often accused of wasting his genius on scandalous pursuits involving fast cars and faster women.

Captain America

Chris Evans plays Captain America, a genetically engineered super soldier who was created during World War II to battle the Nazis and the Hydra, an especially evil off-shoot of Nazi Germany led by Red Skull. After defeating his arch-enemy, Captain America crashed his plane in Antarctica, freezing him in stasis until he was reawakened in the 21st century.

The Incredible Hulk

Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner, the mild-mannered scientist with an uncontrollable urge to smash things once he becomes angry. In the first movie, the Hulk demonstrates that he is able to at least channel his anger and direct his carnage towards the super villains at hand rather than the other members of the Avengers team.

Thor

As the only member of the Avengers not from Earth, Thor plays an integral leadership role in the team. Chris Hemsworth plays the Norse God from Asgard who battles foes with his legendary hammer, Mjolnir.

Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson plays this lesser-known superheroine. She has no superpowers per se, but she does have genius-level intuition and the ability to pull information out of people, willingly or not. She is seductive and sultry.

Hawkeye

Another superhero member of The Avengers without superpowers, Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner, is still a very capable hero. Wielding his crossbow with the ability to hit any target from nearly any distance, Hawkeye is an important but under-utilized member of the team.

Loki

Tom Hiddleston plays the half-brother of Thor and the main villain in "The Avengers." He is a smooth talker, but he is not very suave. He does not have the rugged good looks of Thor, nor the strength of the Incredible Hulk, but he does have command of an army of foes from another dimension.

Supporting Cast Members

Pepper Potts

Played by Gwyneth Paltrow, Pepper Potts is the girlfriend and assistant of Tony Stark. She is a firecracker in her own right and stands up well against the brashness and eccentricities of Tony and his alter ego.

Nick Fury

The shadowy figurehead of S.H.I.E.L.D. is masterfully played by Samuel L. Jackson. Fury wears an eyepatch, with no explanation as to what happened to his now-missing eye. His origins are unknown, but he has assembled the team with members from all over the world to protect Earth from foes both alien and natural to the planet.

New Superheroes and Supervillains

Quicksilver

Actually the son of the famous X-Men archenemy Magneto, Quicksilver is reportedly getting a whole new origin story for "The Avengers: Age of Ultron." He is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, fresh from his role beating up bad guys of a more dubious strength in "Kick-Ass 2." All signs point to Quicksilver being a very important part of this new movie. His super speed is unmatched by any of the other Avengers, even that of Iron Man.

Scarlet Witch

Quicksilver's sister sports superpowers of her own that are both entirely unique within the group and extremely powerful. While she originally was a villain, she joins with the Avengers to fight the supervillains who threaten the way of life on Earth. She has the power to alter the probability of situations and to cast magical spells. She can read people's thoughts and effectively influence events before they happen. She is played by Elizabeth Olsen.

The Vision

The Vision is the android creation of the Villain Ultron, who turns on his master and helps the Avengers take down the metallic monstrosity. The Vision is the latest addition to Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble film and will see the vision played by veteran actor Paul Bettany, who previously voiced Iron Man's computer side kick J.A.R.V.I.S. It's yet to be know if this fact will play into the creation of The Vision i the film.

Ultron

Whereas Loki brought a lot of firepower with him from the depths of space in the first movie, Ultron's strength lies in the genius of his creator, Iron Man. Tony Stark unwittingly creates Ultron and then must join forces with the rest of the Avengers to destroy him. Unfortunately, his superpower lies in the fact that he continually grows in strength and ability. He is always learning from his surroundings and interactions. James Spader, famous for playing many sociopaths, should play this character well.

War Machine

Colonel James Rhodes is a long-time friend of Tony Stark and one of his allies at the Defense Department before Tony Stark became Iron Man. When Tony creates a special suit for Rhodes, he becomes the War Machine, with a feature-set of powers and abilities very similar to that of Iron Man. He is not quite as strong or fast, but he is extremely capable due to his desire for justice. War Machine is played by Don Cheadle. He is a funny and endearing sidekick to Iron Man in many aspects.

"The Avengers: Age of Ultron" is still filming and may end up containing even more characters, but even with just this cast list, the movie is destined to be one of the most star-studded, action-packed movies of all-time. It should certainly break many box office records along the way and garner even more fans for these legendary superheroes.
