"Terminator 2: Judgment Day"

This classic 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger film is a sequel that stands on its own two feet. Two robots, called terminators, are sent back in time. One is sent to save John Connor, and one is sent to kill him. A fight through a mental institution, a trip to a technology lab and a couple of explosions ensure excitement throughout the film. The Terminator unit played by Schwarzenegger also tosses out some great, funny one-liners to keep the tone a little lighter as the movie progresses.

"The Avengers"

The Avengers are superheroes with a long history in comics, and the 2012 film about the team is part of a larger reboot of the comic characters. Loki is the main villain in this action-packed movie, trying to take over the world. In response, Nick Fury recruits the best heroes in the world. The action sequences are punctuated by snappy one-liners and banter between the heroes as they learn to work together.

"Men in Black"

Will Smith steals the screen in this funny, action-filled 1997 hit. A secret organization keeps the world safe from aliens and hires Smith's character, Agent J. Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K acts as a mentor for Agent J, teaching him the ins and outs of the organization while they fight a skin-stealing bug-like alien.

"Ghostbusters"

1984 saw the start of the Ghostbusters franchise. This film is filled with big names, such as Bill Murray and Rick Moranis. A group of parapsychologists come together to create a company focused around ghost research and extermination. The group becomes reaches celebrity status in the city while a demonic spirit grows as the main villain of the film. The funny journey involves a good bit of action and a lot of fun.

"Quarantine 2: Terminal"

This 2011 sequel to "Quarantine" is considered the better of the two films. A small plane takes off, and one of the passengers becomes sick and flies into a rage. Once the plane lands, the passengers are directed to a terminal that is sealed off from the outside world. The small group is locked inside, and individuals get infected with a mysterious disease. The sickness is finally explained in this film, removing the mystery while filling in the background.

"Hellboy"

Hellboy is a sarcastic, unrefined hero who is far from the perfect, clean heroes common in many comics. This 2004 film stars Ron Perlman as the title character, a role he reprises in the sequel. The antagonist is Grigori Rasputin, who is determined to open a portal to create a new world through the destruction of the current one. This is a wonderful introduction to the characters even for those unfamiliar with the comic. There are plenty of funny quips and intense action scenes.

"Planet of the Apes"

This classic 1968 movie is based on a novel of the same name and is considered one of the great sci-fi movies of the era. A group of astronauts crash-land on a planet ruled by intelligent apes. The astronauts learn about the society, in which different species hold different roles. Things turn sour over the role of humans in the strange planet's social system.

James Bond returns in this 2012 movie as actor Daniel Craig. The movie opens with action, something not uncommon in Bond movies. Bond is soon on the hunt for a disc containing crucial files. "Captain America: The First Avenger"

During World War II, Steve Rogers is deemed unfit for military duty but volunteers for a secret project. The enhanced soldier is used as both a weapon and a propaganda tool during the war and encounters his soon-to-be archnemesis during his travels.

"Resident Evil"

In this 2002 film, a virus breaks out from a research lab and turns all of those infected into hungry zombies. The company computer mainframe locks down the lab in an attempt to contain the infection. A team is sent to shut down the computer and attempt to keep the infection from escaping the complex. This is the first movie in the "Resident Evil" franchise, which includes multiple movies, video games and other media.
