Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

Thanks to earnings of $32 million, "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" topped the box office during the weekend of Friday, October 25. When a grandfather takes his young grandson on a raucous road trip, the two encounter some strange characters. Along the way, they'll make both friends and enemies, leaving a trail of mischief and mayhem in their wake. The hidden camera format captures real reactions from shocked bystanders and unsuspecting strangers. The movie has an R rating for crude mature content, graphic nudity, brief drug use, and language.

Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" debuted in fourth place, earning $8 million. Based on an original screenplay by Cormac McCarthy, the film features a lawyer who is eager to make extra cash. After his unscrupulous colleague encourages the lawyer to become involved with an underground drug ring, his life starts to crumble at the edges. It may be too late for him to turn back. "The Counselor" has an R rating for grisly images, strong violence, mature content, and language.

Continuing Films

This past weekend, "Gravity" dropped to second place in box office rankings. The film earned $20,300,000, adding to profits of more than $199 million. Accidentally abandoned in outer space, a medical engineer has to draw on her brief training period to survive the hostile and lonely environment. She meets with obstacles and dangers at every turn, forcing her to draw on her own inner strength and ingenuity to make her way back home. The movie has a PG-13 rating for brief strong language, disturbing images, and intense perilous sequences.

"Captain Phillips" saw weekend earnings of $11,800,000. Overall, the movie has brought in more than $70 million. A leader of a Somali pirate group and the commanding officer of a container ship meet under strange circumstances. The pirates take the ship hostage, leading to a face-off that may have negative consequences for both the pirates and the crew. It is up to Captain Phillips to defuse the situation. "Captain Phillips" has a PG-13 rating for sequences of menace, substance abuse, and violence that includes bloody images.

"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" has brought in more than $100 million in total. This past weekend, the animated movie earned $6,100,000. Flint and friends head back to Swallow Falls to retrieve Flint's invention. What they find is a wilderness overrun with foodimals, from shrimpanzees to fruit cockatiels. As they try to navigate this wild world, Flint and his pals need to be extra careful, but carefulness is not Flint's strong suit. The family-friendly flick has a PG rating for mild rude humor.

"Carrie" drew Halloween moviegoers, earning $5,900,000. The horror remake has brought in $26,021,355 since its debut. Carrie is the unpopular girl at school. At home, things are not much better. In addition to trying desperately to fit in, Carrie also worries about the strange powers she seems to possess. If her classmates push her a little too far, her life could come crashing down around her. The film's R rating is due to bloody violence, language, disturbing images, and some mature content.

"Escape Plan" earned $4,340,000. The thriller has earned over $17 million overall. When Ray Breslin unexpectedly ends up in the world's most secret and impenetrable prison, he knows that he is the only man who can even hope to find a way to freedom. Ray is a security analyst, well-versed in the secrets of the most exclusive, high security prisons. Violence and language throughout contribute to an R rating.

Movies to DVD

"Monsters University" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, October 29. Mike and Sully both head off to Monsters University, but they have very different goals in mind. Sully loves to party, while Mike is a hardworking student who just wants to succeed. Before long, the two become rivals. With time, though, they might just become best friends. "Monsters University" has a G rating.

"R.I.P.D." stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as partners who fight crime in the afterlife. Nick discovers that his days as a police officer are not over. After his death, he joins up with the gruff and grumpy Roy to protect humanity from supernatural threats. At the same time, Nick hopes to bring his killer to justice. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to violence, sci-fi action, sensuality, and language that includes mature references.

In "Byzantium," a mysterious mother and daughter have something to hide. When the pair seeks refuge in a coastal town, the residents are fascinated and frightened by them. One lonely young man falls under their spell, but he has not yet discovered their secret. If the women do not learn how to control their cravings, the whole town could end up suffering. "Byzantium" has an R rating for mature content, violence, and language.
