Monday Wrap-Up: What Happened Over the Weekend?

"Battleship" earned $25,350,300 its opening weekend, landing second place in overall box office rankings. The sci-fi epic focuses on a Navy fleet that runs into a completely unexpected problem. A group of super-intelligent aliens is threatening the fate of the world, and it is up to this brave fleet to fight back. The star-studded cast includes Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and others. "Battleship" has a PG-13 rating for language and for intense violence and action sequences.

"The Dictator" brought in over $17 million during the past weekend. The controversial comedy earned third place at the box office. Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Haffaz Alladeen, the wealthy and tyrannical ruler of an African nation. During a trip to the UN, Alladeen winds up in a tricky situation, stripped of his title. He has to accept a job at an organic foods market, but his customer service skills are severely lacking. "The Dictator" has an R rating for nudity, language, violent images and crude content.

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" is a refreshing new comedy about parenthood, from pregnancy to beyond. Five couples each have to face unique challenges on their journey towards parenthood. Rosie and Marco are not sure how to react when Rosie winds up pregnant after a brief romantic encounter. Holly and Alex are having trouble conceiving, so Holly decides to adopt. Wendy is full of strong ideas and beliefs about motherhood, but becoming a mother changes many of her core ideas. The film earned $10,500,000 during the past weekend. The PG-13 rating is due to crude content, language and thematic elements.

Other Theatrical Releases
"Marvel's The Avengers" brought in over $55 million during the weekend of May 18th, holding steady with a top spot in box office rankings. The total earnings amount to over $457 million. After evil Loki compromises S.H.E.I.L.D. and one of their top agents is kidnapped, Nick Fury gathers a team of top superheroes. Their big personalities might clash as they track down Loki. The action film is rated PG-13 for a drug reference and sci-fi action and violence.

"Dark Shadows" brought in $12,770,000, with an overall gross of over $59 million. The dark comedy and fantasy film stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a vampire who returns to his ancestral manse. Barnabas is not prepared to deal with his unruly descendants. "Dark Shadows" has a PG-13 rating for comic violence, mature themes, smoking, drug use and language.

"The Hunger Games" earned $3 million, bringing total earnings up to an impressive $391,631,110. Brave young Katniss Everdeen competes in an intense life-or-death competition. All she really wants is to see her family again. The film has a PG-13 rating for intense violence and disturbing images.

Movies to DVD
Daniel Radcliffe takes on one of his first major film roles since his starring role in the "Harry Potter" series. "Woman in Black" is an eerie gothic horror movie that comes out on DVD this Tuesday. Still mourning the loss of his family, a young London lawyer tries to save his career by taking on a strange case. His job is to settle the estate of a dead woman in a remote village. When the lawyer finds dark secrets waiting for him, he realizes his role there is much larger. "Woman in Black" is rated PG-13 for disturbing imagery, violence and thematic material.

"Red Tails" is a thrilling war film about a close-knit group of African-American aviators and their brave battle during World War II. Even with a war raging, the soldiers have to face racial discrimination from their own troops. However, in the year 1944, the Tuskegee Airmen finally get the chance to prove their prowess. "Red Tails" has a PG-13 rating for war violence.

"This Means War" stars Tom Hardy and Chris Pine as two CIA agents. Sharing a job title does not stop the two men from being best friends. When they both fall in love with the same gorgeous and feisty woman, however, their friendship is seriously challenged. The two men start using their CIA training to sabotage each other's efforts to win the girl's heart. "This Means War" has an R rating for mature content.

Imaginative director Hayao Miyazaki has created another fantastical animated film. "The Secret World of Arrietty" is based on "The Borrowers," a classic children's book.
