Jim Carrey is one of those polarizing comedy actors who is either loved or despised by movie goers. To many, he is one of the funniest actor currently in Hollywood. The list of Jim Carrey movies includes some of the most funny movies of all time. The collection of movies with Jim Carrey covers a broad range of genres, though he is known mainly for his very zany, over-the-top comedy style. While he actually appeared in films before then, Carrey’s popular role as Ace Ventura (1994) is what made him a household name in the acting world.
Trying to figure which of his memorable and often funny films is the best is difficult since many people have different views on what his best acting style is. But, this list of Jim Carrey movies is focused on the Top 10 movies with Jim Carrey of all time, beginning in the late-1980s when he first appeared prominently on screen, through his most recent film roles.
For the purposes of this top 10 list of Jim Carrey movies, the movie must have been entertaining, well-received commercially and/or critically, perhaps epic in nature with a lasting impact, iconic in its time, and Carrey must have been a significant player in the film.
Best Jim Carrey Movies of All Time
10. The Number 23 (2007) - This is certainly the darkest movie with Jim Carrey as it is a psychological thriller that keeps you riveted throughout.
9. The Cable Guy (1996) - Carrey stars opposite Matthew Broderick in this film about a lonely cable guy (Carrey) who becomes obsessed at the prospect of finding a best friend when he “hooks up” his new customer (Broderick).
8. Dumb & Dumber (1994) – Carrey showed his versatility in this classic comedy that also stars Jeff Daniels. The two stars make an adventurous and funny journey across country in a dilapidated van.
7. The Majestic (2001) – Among the more “conventional” Jim Carrey movies, this drama tells the story of a hometown hero who struggles to remember his identity after suffering amnesia. A nice romantic comedy movie with a unique feel.
6. Liar Liar (1997) – Another classic, and more conventional of the movies with Jim Carrey, this one is a story about a lawyer (Carrey) who lacks compassion and priorities until his son’s birthday wish that his dad cannot lie comes to fruition. ER’s Maura Tierney stars as Carrey’s ex-wife.
5. The Mask (1994) - The Mask was an excellent follow up for Carrey to his most iconic role as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. This unique comedy helped prove Carrey’s versatility as a physical comedy actor with talent in a more dramatic and action-filled role.
4. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) - If there is one film in this top 10 list of Jim Carrey movies that is the most polarizing, it is the original Ace Ventura movie. It certainly helped create the very unique identity that Carrey is known for, but some fans prefer his less zany and all-over-the-place comedy. The movie itself is entertaining and very memorable.
3. The Truman Show (1998) – Another of the more memorable and convention Jim Carrey movies, this one plays off the popular combination of reality show/soap opera. Carrey stars as Truman, a man who grows up not realizing his entire life is scripted in a made-for-TV world. This film was actually groundbreaking given that reality TV didn’t really take off for another one to two years!
2. Me, Myself & Irene (2000) – Perhaps the best blend of zany Jim Carrey with dramatic Jim Carrey, this very funny film is a story about a Rhode Island cop (Carrey) whose “doormat” personality leads to a split, and creates a separate, uninhibited personality. Renee Zelweger is a great co-star!
1. Bruce Almighty (2003) – Also one of the best Jennifer Aniston movies, this most “divine” of the movies with Jim Carrey tells of one man’s (Carrey) assistance from a higher power (God/Morgan Freeman) in getting over his self pitying behavior.
Others considered for this list of Jim Carrey movies: Yes Man (2008), Fun with Dick and Jane (2005), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
No doubt there are great Jim Carrey movies not included in this list and likely more good ones to come. In fact, there are several that could have been comfortably included without reservation. However, the list in place gives a good scope of the legacy of Jim Carrey films that now spans about 20 years.
