Weekend Wrap-Up: What Happened at the Box Office?

-- "The Bourne Legacy" managed to push "The Dark Knight" out of the top spot in box office rankings. The thriller earned $40,265,000 during its opening weekend. Agent Aaron Cross works for the Operation Outcome, using pills to enhance his capabilities. When he runs out of pills during a routine mission, Cross is shocked to learn that his enemies double as his employers. The agent has to battle for his life, going head to head against the people he thought he could trust. "The Bourne Legacy" is rated PG-13 for violence and action sequences.

With profits of over $27 million, "The Campaign" landed in second spot in the box office rankings during its debut weekend. Cam Brady is proud of his job as a congressman, but after the press gets word of a scandalous affair, Brady's title is up for grabs. He will have to face off with Marty Huggins, a wholesome and bumbling tourism director who just might have some tricks up his sleeves. The raucous comedy has an R rating for crude content, nudity and language.

"Hope Springs" earned over $15 million during the weekend. Since its opening on Wednesday, August 8th, the poignant comedy has brought in more than $20 million. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones star as a married couple. While everything in their lives is technically going well, Kay begins to realize that Arnold is basically a stranger to her. Hoping to revive their spark, the two set out to meet with a renowned marriage counselor. The PG-13 rating is due to mature thematic content.

Continuing Films

"The Dark Knight Rises" dropped to third place during its fourth weekend in the theaters. The weekend profits of $19,540,000 have brought the total earnings to more than $390 million. Eight years after the events of "The Dark Knight," Bruce Wayne has transformed from a vigilante into a recluse. When a terrorist begins spreading fear and mayhem, Batman has to make tough decisions about whether to step in and help the city that he fears longer needs him. The film is rated PG-13 for brief sensuality, language and intense action sequences that include violence.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" earned $8,200,000. The total gross now reaches over $30 million. Greg Heffley has some big plans for the summer, but in typical Greg fashion, he manages to accidentally sabotage all his own schemes. It will take some quick thinking and some help from his friends and family to redeem his summer vacation. The family-friendly PG rating is due to rude humor.

"Total Recall" added to its overall gross of more than $44 million, bringing in an additional $8,100,000 during its second weekend in theaters. When a factory worker decides to have fake memories implanted in his brain, he has no idea how much his life will change. Soon, he is fighting for his future and struggling to figure out his past. The PG-13 rating is due to brief nudity, mature content, language and intense sci-fi violence.

During its fifth weekend, "Ice Age: Continental Drift" has continued to make an appearance in the top box office rankings. Its weekend earnings of $6,750,000 brought the total earnings to over $144 million. Manny, Diego and Sid set out to put things right after an unexpected accident leaves everybody in upheaval. The family-friendly animated adventure has a PG rating for rude humor and scenes of action and peril.

Movies to DVD

"The Raid: Redemption" comes to DVD and Blu-Ray on August 14th. The Indonesian thriller focuses on an abandoned apartment complex that has become the headquarters for the world's most dangerous criminals. One SWAT team is willing to risk life and limb to infiltrate the building. The action film's R rating is due to intense and bloody violence, as well as language.

"Hick" stars Chloe Grace Moretz in a daring role. When a young girl decides to run away from her unhappy life, she ends up in over her head. She has to rely on strangers to help her get to her destination. The gritty movie has an R rating for language, drinking, drug use, violence and disturbing content that involves a teenager.

"A Girl Walks Into a Bar" takes place at several different bars in the city of Los Angeles. The dark comedy follows the intertwining stories that play out between bar-hopping strangers, all of whom end up connecting in unexpected ways. The R rating is because of brief nudity and mature references.

"Tonight YouÕre Mine" is a comedic drama with a rocker twist. When two rock stars end up performing at the same venue, their rivalry deepens. Fate takes a strange turn when the two end up handcuffed together for the evening. "Tonight YouÕre Mine" is rated R for language and some mature content.
