Carey Mulligan has won the lead role in Baz Luhrmann's version of the 'The Great Gatsby'.

The 'Moulin Rouge' director has cast the British actress as Daisy Buchanan in his forthcoming adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, and told her while she was on the red carpet at the Fashion Council Awards in New York.

According to, the 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' star burst into tears upon being told the news, which came to her on her mobile phone.

Luhrmann said: "However, specific to this particular production of 'The Great Gatsby', I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan'.

However, Baz Luhrmann did not confirm 'The Great Gatsby' would definitely be his next project.

He said: "There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film."

The original book tells the tale of a man who moves from the Mid-West of America to the East Coast and finds himself fascinated by his new mysterious neighbour.

A film version of the book was created in 1974 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and it is expected Tobey Maguire will appear alongside Mulligan in the remake.
