Thanks to all who participated in the nomination and voting process.  It has been a very competitive vote as there were a slew of great 2009 DVDs to choose from.  Many of the category awards were very competitive.

Best Comedy DVD of 2009: (500) Days of Summer

Romantics win out as this clever and witty Zoey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt film beat out other great 2009 comedy DVDs including Critics Choice Awards winner The Hangover.

The Wrestler DVDBest Drama DVD of 2009: The Wrestler

This was the most competitive genre award across the board with several great drama movies getting consideration.  Julie & Julia and Milk were among the other leading candidates.

Best Action DVD of 2009: Inglourious Basterds

Among the best Brad Pitt movies of all time, this very clever Tarantino film puts a uniquely fiction spin on the legacy of World War II and the Hitler regime.  It easily beat out other top competitors Public Enemies and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Best Sci-Fi DVD of 2009: Star Trek

It was a two movie race for the top sci-fi DVD of 2009 with Star Trek edging out one of the best alien movies of all time, District 9.

Best Horror DVD of 2009: Paranormal Activity

Drag Me to Hell and The Last House on the Left offered a bit of a fight, but Paranormal Activity easily one for the best horror DVD of 2009.  It was also one of the last films released on DVD in 2009 with a December 29th release date.

Best Fantasy/Adventure DVD of 2009: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

In a very top heavy category, the latest Harry Potter release edged out top competitors like Twilight, Angels & Demons and X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Best Kids/Family DVD of 2009: Up

Arguably the best family movie release sine WALL-E, Up easily beat other top 2009 Kids/Family DVDs like Ice Age 3, G-Force and Coraline.

Best Indie DVD of 2009: (500) Days of Summer

Another win for this great romantic comedy DVD which bested Slumdog Millionaire as the best independent film DVD of 2009.

True Blood Season 1Best TV DVD of 2009: True Blood Season 1

Apparently all of the vampire lovers flocked to the first season of this very riveting showtime series that stars Anna Paquin.  It is about a community in which humans and vampires live hand in hand, with lots of tension and drama of course.  Lost Season 5 was another notable finalist among the best TV DVDs of 2009.

Best Actor in a DVD of 2009: Johnny Depp (Public Enemies)

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Sean Penn (Milk) were others given consideration but another great addition to the list of Johnny Depp movies earns him the top actor award.

Best Actress in a DVD of 2009: Kate Winslett (The Reader and Revolutionary Road)

Winslett was recognized for two great drama movies performances during 2009.  Amy Adams (Julie & Julia), 2010 Critics Choice Award Winner Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), and Abigail Breslin (My Sister’s Keeper) were also considered.

Best Overall DVD of 2009: Up

Animated family movies have been very popular in both theatrical and DVD release the last few years.  Up is a great animation that offers cool characters and a fun family story, from Pixar.  Other great 2009 DVDs were given significant consideration including Inglourious Basterds, Star Trek, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

It is hard to believe, but as the end of 2009 is near, it is time again for us to honor some of the best DVD releases of 2009.  The Second Annual Movie Room Reviews DVD Awards celebrates the best movie releases in DVD format during the current year.  The awards honor titles in many of the top movie and DVD genres.  To make the event even more fun, we ask for your involvement in the nomination process, which also makes you eligible for a prize in our huge End of 2009 Celebration Giveaway (Details below).  Finalists for awards will be based on editorial decisions taking into account input from nominations by readers.  Winners will be based entirely on reader votes.

Our 2009 DVD Awards will recognize winners in these categories:
Comedy, Drama, Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy/Adventure, Kids/Family, Indie, TV Series, Actor in a DVD, Actress in a DVD, Best DVD (12 Total Awards)

In order to be considered for an award in a genre category, the movie must have been released on DVD during 2009.  DVDs are only eligible to win one category award and they will be placed in the most appropriate genre.  Overall awards for actor, actress and best DVD can include a DVD of any genre, including those nominated in a genre.

Our 2009 DVD Awards will be announced on this page (at the top) on January 16th, but we need your help. We want the awards to be representative of our readers point of view. First, we are going to ask your help in nominating finalists. This is where the giveaway comes into play. Second, we’ll ask your assistance in voting during the first half of January prior to the selection of winners.

As part of the 2009 DVD movie celebration we are offering two winners some of the best DVD releases of 2009. Participation in the giveaway is simple. Please reply to this post and tell us your favorite 2009 DVDs (or actor/actress) in at least 5 of the award categories (be ambitious though and share them all).
