Fear of Fiction DVD Review

Fear of Fiction DVDFear of Fiction was originally released in theaters in 2000 and finally made its DVD debut on November 17th thanks to leading niche indie DVD label Brink DVD.  The movie is a critically acclaimed road movie from Charlie Ahearn, the director of the seminal hip-hop film Wild Style. It stars Oscar Nominated Melissa Leo(Frozen River), HBO’s True Blood’s Sam Trammell in his first starring feature film, and Penn Jillette. The film features music by Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, and Lounge Lizard Evan Lurie.

Sigrid Anderssen (Oscar Nominee Melissa Leo) is a striking young novelist who has a bad case of writer’s block. To clear her mind she answers an ad in the newspaper placed by Red (True Blood’s Sam Trammell), a man who is driving cross-country and needs a partner. Along the way, they pick up Red’s identical twin brother Tom and the three embark on a surreal journey, providing a new outlook on life for Sigrid and more writing material than she ever bargained for.

Fear of Fiction is one of the strangest films to release on DVD in some time.  It is a very artisticly driven story and offers some quirky, offbeat characters and plenty of intense moments and sequences.  Be prepared to focus your full attention on the movie as it presents a story that is very difficult to follow.  There are several changes in time and setting with lots of parallel plot lines.

Sam Trammel was a great young actor in this 2000 role and fans of the hit True Blood show may hardly recognize the young star in his first feature film role.  Melissa Leo is the driving force behind Fear of Fiction.  Her acting persona and talent meshes brilliantly with her character, a writing struggling for a muse who seems to be in control of her life despite an odd way of dealing with life’s realities.

Fear of Fiction is not a movie that will entertain the mainstream movie goer in need of non-stop action, comedy, or drama.  It is a character-driven tale with lots of weird moments and sequences that find their way into an otherwise naturally flowing plot.  If you like the more unconventional and unpredictable film, it would be a good match.

The Mentalist: The Complete First Season DVD Review

September 21, 2009 by Admin/Neil

The Mentalist DVD coverAccording to the dictionary, a mentalist is defined as “a master manipulator of thought and behavior”. In the Warner Home Video September 22nd DVD release of The Mentalist: The Complete First Season, Simon Baker is Patrick Jane, a celebrity psychic whose wife and child are viciously murdered by an elusive serial killer known as Red John.

Patrick is devastated and reveals that has has know paranormal skills and leaves his life of fame and shame. Instead, he now puts his talents that are pseudo-pscyhic to use as a consultant with California crimes (a la Patricia Arquette in Medium, but with a different skillset). He also has trouble sleeping, but not because he awakes to dreams in mid-sleep. Instead, images of his dead wife and child haunt him.

The Mentalist is loaded with episode after episode of cases in which Patrick helps lead a team of criminal chasers. Despite plenty of successful pursuits, Patrick can never let go of his ultimate goal of tracking Red John.

If you like humorous dramas led by captivating actors, The Mentalist is your kind of show. It certainly parallels Medium, but Simon Baker may be a bit less annoying at times than Arquette. Plus, it is kind of nice to have a lead character who simply has a very powerful natural gift, as opposed to a psychic power.

Simon Baker is one of the most under appreciated actors working today, so it is great to see him as the lead in a popular television show. His charisma, quick wit, and natural cocky-ness contribute to the appeal of his character, who operates with a seemingly uninhibited approach to solving cases. He manages to ruffle the feathers of his more “normally skilled” colleagues, though they are easily reigned in by his charm. Robin Tunney is also great and a personal favorite. She offers a perfect sidekick and flirting partner for Baker.

The Mentalist: The Complete First Season includes 24 great episodes with plenty of humor, drama, mysteries, and more!

MPAA Rating: NR
Running Time: 998 minutes
DVD Release Date: September 22, 2009

Creators: Bruno Heller
Starring: Simon Baker, Robin Tunney
