Christoph Waltz is set to play Mikhail Gorbachev in a film about the end of the Cold War.

The 'Water For Elephants' actor has signed up to play the Soviet leader in 'Reykjavik' opposite Michael Douglas, who will play US President Ronald Reagan in the Mike Newell-directed picture.

The film tells the tale of the meeting between the two leaders in the Icelandic capital in 1986.

Production starts on the picture - written by 'Becoming Jane' scribe Kevin Hood - in March 2013, with filming set to place in Iceland and Germany.

The talks themselves actually collapsed at the last minute, but the meeting pre-empted the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty which led to the demise of The Cold War.

Austrian-born Christoph has a number of pictures lined up for release later this year and early 2013, including 'Django Unchained', 'Epic' and 'The Zero Theorem'.

He was last seen in 'Carnage' alongside Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet, and films including 'Inglorious Basterds' and 'The Green Hornet'.
