-- Director Tom Tykwer teams up with the Wachowski siblings, Andy and Lana, to bring a thrilling new sci-fi drama to theaters. Debuting on Friday, October 26th, "Cloud Atlas" explores themes of reincarnation. At different points throughout time, common threads connect seemingly unrelated events. A murder that occurs in the shadow of a nuclear power plant turns out to have startling connections to a trip across the Pacific Ocean during the era of the Gold Rush. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and other stars appear in the ensemble cast. "Cloud Atlas" has an R rating for drug use, nudity, language, mature content, and violence.
Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson direct "Chasing Mavericks." The film draws inspiration from the true story of Jay Moriarty. Young Jay has heard about the legendary Mavericks surf break, which is home to the biggest waves on the planet. However, once he realizes that the break is close to his hometown, Jay decides to take action. Before he can make history by taming the waves, he has to convince a surfing legend to help him train. The thrilling film has a PG for action and thematic elements.
Arriving in theaters on Friday, "Silent Hill: Revolution 3D" is the much anticipated sequel to "Silent Hill" (2006). The atmospheric horror film focuses on a demonic world, populated by strange inhabitants. After losing her father to unknown forces, Heather Mason has been trying to stay sane and keep a looming threat at bay. After she learns a secret about her true identity, Heather ends up thrust into a world entirely unlike her own. The creepy mystery has an R rating for brief nudity, language, violence, and disturbing images. Michael J. Bassett directs.
"Fun Size" is a comedy from debut director Josh Schwartz. Halloween is a time to have fun, which is why Wren is so excited to attend her crush's big party. Her parents quickly put a damper on her plans. Instead of hanging out with her dream guy, Wren ends up escorting her bratty little brother during trick-or-treating. When her brother vanishes, Wren's annoyance turns to panic. She recruits her friends to find the lost Spiderman. The edgy teen comedy has a PG-13 rating for language, partying, and suggestive material.
"The Loneliest Planet" arrives in select theaters on October 26th. Julia Loktev's thriller focuses on an adventurous young couple. Rather than heading to typical destinations, the two decide to explore the remote, untamed wilderness of Georgia. Led only by a local guide, the two soon realize that the voyage could affect everything they know about life, love, and each other. In a single instant, everything might change between Nica and Alex. "The Loneliest Planet" is unrated.
"Paranormal Activity 4" is the latest installment in the popular series of found footage horror films. Henry Joost and Ariel Schuman return after their work on "Paranormal Activity 3" (2011). After their mysterious new neighbor runs into some trouble, an ordinary suburban family agrees to let the woman's five-year-old boy stay with them. Once the child is under their roof, however, unsettling and bizarre occurrences turn their lives upside down. Katie Featherston reprises her role from the earlier films. The movie has an R rating for violence, terror, and language.
"Argo" stars Ben Affleck as an inventive CIA specialist. The year is 1980, and with tensions reaching a boiling point in Iran, American expats are in grave danger. Six Americans seek shelter with the Canadian Ambassador, but their luck could run out at any moment. Tony Mendez has the difficult task of bringing the Americans to safety. He comes up with a plan that is just absurd and ambitious enough to work, but Mendez will have to stay on his toes and think fast. Ben Affleck directs the film, which has an R rating for violent images and language.
"Taken 2" sees Liam Neeson return to one of his most popular roles. Retired CIA agent Bryan Mills heads off to Istanbul, where he hopes to meet with his ex-wife and teenage daughter. The three do not have much time for a heartwarming reunion, since Bryan's Albanian enemies are still out to get him. Bryan's daughter escapes and has to use her wits to help her parents fight their way to safety. Olivier Megaton directs. "Taken 2" has a PG-13 for sensuality, violence, and action.
"Hotel Transylvania" features the voice talents of Adam Sandler. Not just a bloodsucking spook, Dracula is actually a savvy businessman who caters to his fellow monsters. Together, they enjoy time at a peaceful and secluded resort, far from the interference of pesky human beings. When an oblivious human manages to find the hideout, all bets are off. Genndy Tartakovsky directs. The film has a PG rating for rude humor, scary images, and action.
