Pharrell Williams has joined the Oscar jury to help decide the recipients for next year's awards.

The 'Happy' hitmaker has both been named by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the newest members of the panel.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' star Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o are also among the actors invited to join the academy.

Its president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, said: ''This year's class of invitees represents some of the most talented, creative and passionate filmmakers working in our industry today.

''Their contributions to film have entertained audiences around the world, and we are proud to welcome them to the Academy.''

Williams was nominated at this year's ceremony, although his track 'Happy' - written for 'Despicable Me 2' - lost to 'Let It Go' from 'Frozen', which won the Best Original Song prize.

Meanwhile, Nyong'o took home the gong for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her performance as Patsey in '12 Years a Slave'.

Fassbender's own role in the movie - as Edwin Epps - saw him nominated in the Best Supporting Actor, losing out to 'Dallas Buyers Club' star Jared Leto.
