Dev Patel and Toni Collette have joined the cast of 'Defiant'.

The 'Muriel's Wedding' actress and the 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' star will take leading roles in the movie based on the true story of a double honour killing in India.

The movie tells the tale of two Muslim women who allegedly killed their daughters because they had eloped and married Hindu builders.

Muslim men are allowed to marry non-Muslim women in Islamic law but women are not allowed to marry non-Muslim men.

Dev will play a young man who is trying to escape with his girlfriend from vengeful parents while Toni will portray a journalist who is covering the story.

Bill Bennett is directing the project.

Toni is currently believed to be filming a role in 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho' and recently signed up to star in 'The Way, Way Back' alongside Steve Carell, who she previously worked with on critically-acclaimed 'Little Miss Sunshine'.
