Dog Days of Summer is an April 21st DVD release from the producers of The Ultimate Gift and Anchor Bay Entertainment. This story takes place in the perfect town and involves a mysterious stranger with a simple proposition and a powerful secret. Eli Cottonmouth (Will Patton) arrives in town with an offer and charms the townsfolk into hiring him to build a model of the town in honor of the upcoming celebration.
Directed by Mark Freiburger, Dog Days of Summer is a Dove Family Approved film for ages 12+ so you know that it offers a family-friendly story for those with older kids.
As Eli works to recreate the town model, he operates in extreme secrecy, which draws the ire of some of the town’s leaders and attracts the attention of two young boys who want to learn more about what he is up to. Eli uses the two boys to snap pictures of the town as part of his “research” for putting together his model.
As the boys comb the town trying to cover every part of town life, they find wonder, disappointment, and shock about what they see happening all around them. This story reaches its climax in a nicely hidden conclusion when Eli’s secret agenda comes to life, and the town is likely to never be the same again.
Dog Days of Summer is extremely well written, developed and presented. This movie does a wonderful job building momentum toward the fantastic conclusion without showing too much too early. It has a nice mystery component, compelling characters led by Cottonmouth, and defining moments of drama. The acting is solid. As the Dove Family Approval indicates, 12+ is likely the appropriate maturity level for this movie. It does have some impacting scenes and violent moments that could be disturbing to younger viewers.
