"Dumb & Dumber" Twenty Years Later

--Back in 1994, Conundrum Entertainment's Farrelly brothers, a pair known today for writing and directing many successful comedy films, released their first full-length comedy motion picture: "Dumb & Dumber." Whether the Farrellys expected it or not, the film became a success both in the USA and internationally, and it turned into what many consider a comedy classic.

The film centers around the activities of two foolish yet good-hearted friends, Harry and Lloyd, as they try to solve the various issues in their lives. Its comedy comes from the difficult but humorous situations the two put themselves in by always making dumb choices, along with the ironic way in which the same continuous string of bad decisions tends to get them out of those situations. Throughout the film, the men constantly prove to the audience that they lack any form of common sense and that the IQ of each is at least well below average. For the purposes of this film, this is a great situation. The two friends usually end up making rash decisions, showing a tendency to never think before they act and to never take into account the long-term consequences of their actions. This does not make them evil characters who spread mischief. They are actually good-natured people who do not really know how to solve their problems and who seem to have a rough time of handling life's responsibilities. The film does a great job of entertaining viewers by showing how these two incompetent friends move themselves in and out of predicaments.

The comedy in "Dumb & Dumber" may come from well-written situations and jokes, but it would not have been as successful if not for the actors chosen to play the two protagonists: Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne.

Carrey is known for similar roles of moronic characters, and he tends to play these parts very well by using his unique facial expressions and humorous vocal sounds and body movements. As expected, his performance in this film does not disappoint. Viewers can see how his simple-minded character is driven by his sudden spark of love for a woman he has only seen once in his life. He's so smitten that he convinces his friend to go on a cross-country trip to try to find her. There are many possible comedic situations within this premise, and the Farrelly brothers use this to entertain the audience.

The other component of this duo of dumb friends, played by Daniels, found himself a little out of place by playing such a goofy character-goofy enough to drive a van that completely costumed as a dog. Even so, his performance was on par with that of Carrey; they complemented each other perfectly. The two actors performed every body movement and line masterfully, and each balanced the other's actions.

The combination of good writing and good choice of actors made this film a box-office success and fan favorite. The film retains its ability to be humorous even after several viewings. It even led to the making of an animated series with the same name and premise by Hanna-Barbera Productions, further spreading the film's fame.

Since "Dumb & Dumber" came out, many people have wondered about the possibility of a sequel. In 2003, a prequel to the film, "Dumb & Dumberer," was produced with different actors and different talent behind the cameras. It didn't have the appeal of the original film's two stars, however, so the prequel was largely ignored.

In early 2011, Bobby Farrelly unexpectedly announced the possibility of a long-awaited sequel to "Dumb & Dumber," nothing that people still liked the original in television reruns. In October 2011, it was announced that a script was being written by Sean Anders and Jean Morris. To the delight of the fans who wanted a bit more stability from the project, Peter Farrelly said filming would begin in September 2012, with Carrey and Daniels coming back as the stars. Both had stated their willingness to film a sequel, with both characters coming back at a time 20 years after the events in the original.

Fans can only wait and hope that the sequel will rise to their expectations. What this pair of moronic best friends could be doing 20 years since their first series of mishaps is a mystery many people will be excited to see exposed. In the meantime, watching the original is a good way to bide time up until the sequel's release date, which is somewhere in 2014.
