Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

"Evil Dead" took top honors at the box office during the weekend of April 5. Earnings of $26 million helped the scary remake win out over the competition. When Mia is struggling to overcome her substance abuse problem, four of her closest friends decide to accompany her to a remote cabin, hoping that the isolated vacation will help her overcome her demons. As the five try to relax, they unwittingly end up in the middle of a gruesome bloodbath, fighting desperately for survival. As one person after another falls prey to evil forces, it soon becomes clear that they will not be heading back home any time soon. "Evil Dead" has an R rating for gore, bloody violence, language, and mature content.

Proving that Spielberg's dinosaurs are still crowd-pleasers, "Jurassic Park 3D" earned $18,247,000 during its rerelease debut weekend. A group of hand-selected specialists join an inventive CEO at his up-and-coming theme park. When they realize that the park is a high-tech breeding ground for dinosaurs, the guests begin to realize that this might not be a typical amusement park. After a combination of disasters short-circuits the park's security measures, the excursion quickly turns into a matter of man versus nature. The film's PG-13 rating is due to intense sci-fi terror.

Continuing Films

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" continued to perform well at the box office, adding $21,100,000 to its total. In total, the film has brought in more than $86 million. With Cobra Commander attempting to take control of the country, Roadblock gathers a group of true heroes to fight back against Zartan and the others. However, the G.I. Joe team is facing opposition from all sides, making their job even harder. Brief sensuality, language, and martial arts and combat violence contribute to the film's PG-13 rating.

"The Croods" earned $21,100,000. Since its opening, the animated film has earned over $125 million. Grug just wants to keep his family safe. In his eyes, that means discouraging them from exploring the world or learning about new things. When tragic circumstances force the Croods to leave the safety of their cave, a brainy newcomer named Guy decides to help them out, much to Grug's annoyance. The PG rating is due to scary action.

"Olympus Has Fallen" has brought in $71,115,501 overall, with box office profits of $10,042,000 since its opening. After a tragedy for which he holds himself responsible, a guard moves down the totem pole from lead Secret Service agent to working for the Treasury Department. An unexpected terrorist attack leaves the President vulnerable. Only one man can really save the day, but the disgraced guard will have to rediscover his courage. The R rating is due to language and violence.

"Tyler Perry's Temptation" earned an additional $10 million during the weekend of April 5. Since its opening, the movie has brought in more than $38 million. Judith's job is helping other people with their own love lives, but in a surprising twist of fate, her own relationship ends up on thin ice. Judith will have to figure out where her loyalties lie if she wants to save her marriage. A charismatic playboy makes it harder for Judith to resist temptation. The film's PG-13 rating is due to drug content, mature content, and violence.

"Oz the Great and Powerful" has earned $8,171,000 over the weekend. Overall, the film's profits now reach more than $212 million. Oscar Diggs dreams about a destiny larger than his current role as a smalltime magician. When a tornado and a hot air balloon carry him away to a land beyond his imagination, Oscar realizes that he may be a hero that prophecies have foretold. Faced with the prospect of becoming a true hero, Oscar wonders whether he is really up to the epic challenge. The movie has a PG rating for brief mild language, scary images, and action scenes.

Movies to DVD

"Stolen" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, April 9. Will Montgomery is trying to leave his troubled past behind him, but his past is not so willing to let him walk free. After his release from prison, Will learns that his estranged daughter is in grave danger. He will do anything he can to save her, but it might mean returning to a life of crime. Brief language and violence contribute to an R rating.

"Hyde Park on Hudson" stars Bill Murray as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1939, the United States and the United Kingdom have a meeting of minds when King George VI comes to stay with the President. During their visit, tensions rise and passions come to the open. The President's distant cousin, Daisy, is present for many of the historic events that take place that June. The R rating is due to mature content.
