Evilution, released on November 17th by Black Gate Entertainment, is truly a gorefest, so much so that in the Behind The Scenes bonus feature director Christopher Conlee notes with glee his excitement at the opening sequence with falling-out entrails, stuntspeople, and body-eating. This is a movie for fans of the genre, with more “blood” spilt than I’ve ever seen (and it horrifies me to think that a lower-grade movie might have even more).
The plot has to do with the American Army unleashing a concoction in Iraq that sets free an alien life form in people’s bodies that kills the host and possesses the body (and the infected zombie-like people go around eating everyone in sight). Only one Army member of that time survives, Darrell Hall, and he disappears, but the Army sends Sergeant Gabriel Collins (Tim Colceri) to find him. In the meantime Darrell has rented a basement apartment in an abandoned mansion rented to him by an eccentric manager (Nathan Bexton), and another tenant, Maddie (Sandra Ramirez) has taken a romantic interest in him (until she thinks he’s selling meth to grade-schoolers because he’s supposed to be a science teacher). Darrell has stolen away with some of the Army’s potion and is experimenting with it on rats. One of the first human unfortunates to be infected is Random (Noel G).
It’s hard to talk about acting in these movies because there’s usually a formula: get infected, become a monster, die and/or eat someone in a corridor melee (as Evilution ends in a huge gorefest too, right before a surprising denouement). However Eric Peter Haiser is to be commended for his ability to form very different believable characters (in the last movie I saw him in, he was the very opposite of this character), and Sandra Ramirez also adds a lovely spark to an otherwise uneasy film. The set itself is an old hospital that appears very mysterious.
Rated R, this is not a movie to watch with the kids. I actually wouldn’t recommend it, since the plot beyond the gorefest is truly threadbare – only see it if you’re a gore-fanatic.
