Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

"Frozen" heated up the box office during Thanksgiving week. Weekend profits of $66,713,000, together with earlier earnings, resulted in overall profits of more than $93 million. Brave Anna heads out into an icy wilderness to save the kingdom from a wintry spell. Anna won't be alone; she has allies in the form of Kristoff, an ice salesman who's fallen on hard times, and Olaf, a talking snowman. Mild rude humor and action contribute to a PG rating.

"Homefront" earned $6,970,000 during the weekend of November 29. Total profits reach more than $9 million. When a former DEA agent moves to a small town, hoping to forge a normal life for his daughter, he only runs into more trouble. After running afoul of a meth dealer, the father will do anything it takes to protect his home. The R rating is due to strong violence, language, brief mature content, and drug content.

"Black Nativity" has made $5 million overall, including $3,880,000 in weekend earnings. As his single mother struggles to get by, a teenage boy ends up spending the holidays with his relatives in New York. Although he is initially lost and confused, the young man just might find a spirit of hope in Harlem. The movie's PG rating is due to a menacing situation, thematic material, and language.

Continuing Films

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" stayed on top during Thanksgiving week. The film added $74,500,000 in weekend earnings to its total, resulting in profits of more than $296 million. During her Victory Tour, Katniss Everdeen cannot help noticing that something huge is building behind the scenes. At the same time, the Capitol is making life harder than ever for Katniss, and the young hero finds herself torn between conflicting interests. "Thor: The Dark World" saw additional profits of $11,108,000. Overall earnings have now exceeded the $186 million mark. With the fate of the universe hanging precariously in the balance, Thor must make some tough decisions. He will even form an alliance with his estranged brother, Loki, if it means defeating the Dark Elves and saving humankind and Asgardians alike. The film's PG-13 rating is due to suggestive content and intense sci-fi action and violence.

"The Best Man Holiday" earned $8,500,000 during the weekend. In total, the holiday comedy has earned over $63 million. Harper, Mia, Quentin and their other friends finally have a chance to reunite, after years spent apart. If they were hoping their temporary distance would save them from drama, though, the friends soon learn how much conflict they can still create. The comedic drama's R rating is due to language, brief nudity, and mature content.

"Delivery Man" has seen profits of $6,931,000. Since its debut, the comedy has earned over $19 million. David isn't much of an adult. The chronic underachiever coasts by, but everything changes when he learns that his past has come to haunt him. David's past sperm donations have created hundreds of offspring, many of them curious about their paternity. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to mature content, thematic elements, drug material, brief violence, and language.

"The Book Thief" brought in $4,850,000, with overall earnings now reaching more than $7 million. During the horrors and heartbreak of World War II, a young girl goes to live with a foster family in Germany. To cope with the difficulties of life, the girl begins collecting contraband books, but the habit could prove very dangerous. The PG-13 rating is due to violence and intense depictions of thematic material.

Movies to DVD

"The Wolverine" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, December 3. Logan journeys to Japan after receiving summons from a man he once rescued. Before long, Logan realizes that he's been lured to Japan under false pretenses. Now, stripped of his powers, he has to fight his way to freedom or risk losing everything. The PG-13 rating is due to mature content, language, and intense sci-fi action and violence.

"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" stars Lily Collins as Clary, a teenage girl growing up in New York. Though she has no idea that she's different from other people, Clary slowly begins to realize that her mother may have been hiding some very important secrets from her. The PG-13 rating is due to fantasy action and violence and suggestive content.

"The Smurfs 2" follows the adventures of the Smurfs as they try to outsmart the nefarious Gargamel. When Vexy, one of Gargamel's minions, manages to kidnap Smurfette and bring her to Paris, it's up to Smurfette's friends to journey to France and rescue her -- before it's too late. The movie's PG rating is due to rude humor and action.
