'Rough' Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton used to be "rough".

The 24-year-old actress - who grew up in Gravesend, Kent - admits she had a tough upbringing and had to learn to be "posh" while studying acting at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA).

She said: "I was quite rough when I was younger. I had an attitude. And at RADA they just said, 'It doesn't match your casting,' so I had to learn to be posh in a way.

"I've had problems with people thinking I'm common and making judgements. It really angers me, it's terrible, but people do. So you have to adapt, otherwise you'll be limited."

The actress recently learnt the importance of her looks after wearing a prosthetic nose on her new comedy 'Tamara Drewe' and realising people's attitudes changed.

She explained to Glamour magazine: "People actually treated me differently. They accommodated me less, like I had lower status. Very interesting. The nose is framed in my bathroom now."
