Most people don’t believe in ghosts, but at the back of their minds they still wonder if ghosts can really exist. At least sometimes, somewhere, do ghosts appear to a small set of chosen people? Ghosts of Goldfield, the North American Motion Pictures June 9th, 2009, DVD release explores that possibility as five college students led by Chad (Kellan Lutz) and Julie (Marnette Patterson) set out to find a haunted hotel in Goldfield, Nevada, armed with video equipment and the lie that they are filming for the Discovery Channel.
At nightfall, after their car breaks down, they walk towards town and come upon a cemetery where they look for the grave of a famous ghost, Elizabeth (Ashly Rae), who was murdered in the luxurious (with an elevator and running water!) turn-of-the-century hotel for bearing another man’s child (not that of her lover, George Winfield, the former hotel builder and owner). Julie begins having visual and audio “flashbacks” and communiques as the spirit of Elizabeth begins to possess her. Allowed to sleep overnight in the beautifully restored hotel, the crew becomes uneasy when they hear strange, muted screams intermittently. They begin to video the rooms of the hotel at night as Julie tells the others the gripping story of George’s torture of Elizabeth and the killing of her newly-born child and how now she must roam these rooms for all eternity.
Will the spirit of Elizabeth kill them all through her immense feelings of misplaced rage and revenge and her longing for her missing child? Are there seven portals to the supernatural and is one of them located at the Goldfield Hotel? Julie claims that Elizabeth “passed right through me” but later, in a room that is freezing, Julie actually becomes Elizabeth in the past, after which a series of truly horrifying events occur.
Are ghosts our friends or bleak avengers from other eras seeking justice from every warm-blooded and inquisitive human who comes along? Can curses follow us through the centuries? Can we be possessed, our wills bent and shaped to act out the unfinished tragedies of others? You’ll have to watch Ghosts of Goldfield and draw your own conclusions!
