Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

"Godzilla" easily took top spot at the box office during the weekend of Friday, May 16. Profits of $93,205,000 helped "Godzilla" smash the competition. Following the tragic loss of his mother, Ford Brody has grown up hearing about his father's suspicions towards the government. Now a talented specialist with the U.S. Marines, Ford's entire life changes when he travels to Japan and encounters something he never would have thought possible. The film's PG-13 rating is due to sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence.

"Million Dollar Arm" debuted with $10,511,000. A talent scout hopes to find the next big name in baseball, and he's willing to travel across the globe to do so. Realizing that Indian cricket champions have the potential to become pitchers, he sets up a reality show to narrow down the competition. "Million Dollar Arm" has a PG rating for some suggestive content and mild language.

Continuing Films

"Neighbors" saw profits of $26 million, bringing total earnings to more than $91 million. Mac and Kelly believe they've left their wild days behind them, now settling down to raise a family in a nice neighborhood. A frat house moves in next door, sparking a feud between the couple and the frat brothers that brings out their wild side. The comedy's R rating is due to pervasive language, drug use, graphic nudity and strong crude and mature content.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has earned more than $172 million since its debut, including $16,800,000 earned during the weekend of May 16. Peter Parker is still finding his feet as a superhero, but his confidence grows every day. After reconnecting with an old friend, however, Peter gets some ominous insights into Oscorp. Before long, he's facing the fight of his life and struggling to reclaim his equilibrium. The PG-13 rating is due to sequences of violence and action.

"The Other Woman" earned $6,300,000 over the weekend. Since its opening, the comedy has seen profits of more than $71 million. Carly has an amazing career as a lawyer, but she's still on the search for Mr. Right. Mark seems to fit the bill, until Carly discovers that he's already found a Mrs. Right. To her surprise, Carly ends up forming an alliance with Mark's wife. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to language and mature thematic material and references.

"Heaven is for Real" saw box office proceeds of $4,400,000, bringing overall profits to more than $82 million. Colton Burpo experiences a medical emergency, leaving his parents praying for his safe recovery. Their prayers are answered, but Colton soon reveals something beyond anyone's expectations. He visited heaven and spoke with Jesus. His miraculous experiences will bring questions of faith and doubt to his community. The PG rating is due to thematic material that includes medical situations.

"Rio 2" earned $3,800,000 during the weekend of May 16, bringing total profits to more than $118 million. Blu and Jewel are now a happily married couple with three kids who always keep them busy. Things get even more complicated for the family of macaws after they head to the Amazon to meet some long-lost relatives. Along the way, they may run into some enemies. "Rio 2" has a G rating.

Movies to DVD

"About Last Night" arrives out on DVD on Tuesday, May 20. Sarcastic Bernie and feisty Joan have a volatile relationship, never happy unless they're sparring with each other. After Joan's roommate and Bernie's friend end up in a loving but tenuous relationship, both couples find themselves trying to navigate the many complexities of contemporary romance. The R rating is due to mature content, brief drug use and language.

"Monuments Men" follows a dangerous mission undertaken during the last days of World War II. After they realize that multiple historical artifacts and treasures are under Nazi control and in harm's way, a group of art experts and curators band together to race against time and rescue the priceless items. Historical smoking and war violence contribute to a PG-13 rating.

"Pompeii" stars Kit Harington as Milo, a gladiator who catches the eye of a noble girl. Milo's love for Cassia may be forbidden, but Milo is willing to do whatever it takes to win her heart. Against the background of impending disaster, the gladiator must fight for both their lives. "Pompeii" has a PG-13 rating for mature content, disaster-related action and intense battle sequences.

In "3 Days to Kill," a CIA agent seeks a second chance to connect with his estranged family. After receiving a dire diagnosis, Ethan Renner agrees to complete one final mission if it means he can leave his risky life behind. The problem is that this mission could spell his downfall. The film's PG-13 rating is due to sensuality, language and sequences of action and violence.
