Gotta Catch Santa Claus DVD Review

October 13th, Lionsgate Films releases Gotta Catch Santa Claus an all-new CGI animated feature movie starring William Shatner as the voice of Santa, on DVD. This contemporary Christmas movie matches the best of technology with traditional holiday classics with a real Santa Claus story and six new holiday songs.

Trevor is a 12 year old set on a mission to prove to his friend Veronica, and himself, that Santa Claus does exist. His challenge is to find St. Nick before LeFreeze, a dim-witted monster who has a 100 year grudge to settle. He has plenty of snowman minions on his side as well.

Gotta Catch Santa Claus certainly does have a more modern feel as Christmas and holiday movies go. It truly has a different feel than the classic Rudolph and Frosty stories of days past. The songs are catchy and upbeat and the animation is sound.

A challenge for this new holiday film is that it might have trouble finding a target audience. It appears to be designed for young children and is certainly family-friendly as far as themes and content. However, it presents a debate between to 12 year olds about the existence of Santa Claus.

The moral of the story is solid, but younger children are just discovering Santa and Christmas traditions. Many might not even realize Santa’s existence has been called into question. Kids that are a little older that do get the debate and still want to believe would certainly appreciate the direction of Gotta Catch Santa Claus. If parents feel the concept is a good fit for their children, it makes for a nice, upbeat holiday film. Gotta Catch Santa Claus will also air on ABC Family during their annual “25 Days of Christmas” programming block.
