Leonardo DiCaprio only wanted Carey for "Gatsby"
Leonardo DiCaprio claims Carey Mulligan was the ''only choice'' to star in 'The Great Gatsby' with him.
The actor starred as Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's novel and claims Carey, 28, was the perfect choice to play his doomed love interest Daisy.
He told Now magazine: ''Daisy's an incredibly complex character because she's this ideal of innocence and youth in my character's eyes, but she turns out to be a very morally corrupt person.
''Carey has the sophistication as an actress to be able to play Daisy. She was really the one and only choice after we met her.''
Leonardo, who also played the iconic role of Romeo in Baz Luhrmann's modern day 'Romeo + Juliet,' was thrilled to be working with the director again more than a decade later.
He said: ''I've known Baz ever since we started rehearsals for 'Romeo + Juliet'. I've always been inspired by his enthusiasm.
''He's not afraid to flip it on its side and reinvent the genre, yet at the same time retain the sort of intimate power of the words of the great powers.''
The 'Django Unchained' star also praised Luhrmann for his ability to take a historic novel and make it more contemporary.
He added: ''Baz also infused hip-hop and all kinds of other different elements to connect with a modern day audience.''
