Happy-Go-Lucky DVD Review

Poppy (Sally Hawkins) is a quirky, happy, unabashed and optimistic schoolteacher. Happy-Go-Lucky, on DVD March 10th from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Miramax, follows her through a bit of her adult life and shows how she handles every curve ball thrown at her. Her attitude allows her to manage every situation with a little bit of laughter.
Happy-Go-Lucky takes place in England and is a British comedy. Luckily, it is easily correlated to American culture and there are no jokes that would go over the typical American’s head. Poppy has a colorful group of friends that include her younger and her longtime roommate, Zoe (Alexis Zegerman).
Although the character Poppy is cute and fun (Sally Hawkins received a golden globe nomination for it), this movie fails to hold the audience’s interest. I found myself bored and not interested in what would happen next.
The acting is done quite well, the characters ARE likable, but there just wasn’t much to the plot in Happy-Go-Lucky to make it that memorable. I found myself thinking of other things I could be doing and for a comedy, it failed to hit its mark. I wasn’t all that amused.
