Fun for the Whole Family at the Multiplex in 2014

With 2013 drawing to a close, many moviegoers are getting excited about the upcoming releases of 2014. This year saw the return of heroes such as Iron Man and Superman as they battled a multitude of monsters and minions. Sandra Bullock was lost in space, and faster, scarier zombies threatened the world. In 2014, we'll see robots, dragons, and apes. Wormholes will open up in space, and various mutations will grace the big screen. Overall, movie fans of all ages have something to look forward to.

The fourth installment of the popular "Transformers" series, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" will feature an all-new cast, with Michael Bay returning as director and Steven Spielberg as the executive producer. Mark Wahlberg will star as Cade Yeager, who discovers a dangerous secret along with his daughter Tessa. Nicola Peltz plays the role of Tessa Yeager, and Jack Reynor stars as her racecar-driving boyfriend, Shane. The three leads are contracted to star in an entire upcoming trilogy, which Michael Bay promises will be a slight reboot of the earlier movies. Kelsey Grammer will play Harold Attinger, a government official whose distrust and paranoia should make him a formidable villain to both the Yeagers and the Autobots. "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is set to be released on June 27.

Since the simian virus devastated the world in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Caesar and his evolved followers have become a thriving population in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." A small but determined group of human survivors threatens the apes, but they are able to reach a tenuous peace accord. Unfortunately for both, some members of each group want domination, and a war between the species seems imminent. Opening on July 14, this installment has a new director in Matt Reeves, who promises to take the brand in an exciting new direction.

Christopher Nolan directs "Interstellar," which he cowrote with his brother Jonathan. Starring Hollywood heavyweights Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway, the film centers on a group of people who discover wormholes and use them to break the barriers of space and time. Unfortunately, bending the rules of physics has unintended consequences. Although further details of the movie are still somewhat vague, the big names associated with the film have audiences everywhere waiting excitedly for November 7.

Fans of the X-Men series are fraught with anticipation for "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which is scheduled for release on May 23. This is the seventh film in the franchise and a sequel to both 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand" and 2011's "X-Men: First Class." It also acts a companion piece to "The Wolverine" and takes place after the events in that movie. In this chapter, the X-Men travel back in time to team up with their younger counterparts in an attempt to save the world and protect the future. This installment has an ensemble cast that includes most of the actors from the previous films. Bryan Singer returns as director, and he promises a mind- and time-bending thriller featuring this amazing band of mutants.

Another popular superhero makes his triumphant return in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Audiences truly enjoyed the more vulnerable portrayal of Spidey that Andrew Garfield gave in "The Amazing Spider-Man," and he and costar Emma Stone return in this sequel to the recent franchise reboot. On May 2, the enigmatic OsCorp attempts to eradicate Spider-Man by any means necessary, and it takes a toll on the physical and mental health of Peter Parker. Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti join the cast as villains set to break Parker's web once and for all.

Hollywood is in the midst of making blockbuster trilogies and spin-offs, and that only means that audiences get more chances to see their favorite characters. Whether fresh directors breathe new life into older franchises or different actors join the casts of hit films, something exciting will always be happening at movie theaters in 2014.
