MOTW: Life and Career of Liam Hemsworth

Australian actor Liam Hemsworth was born in Melbourne on January 13, 1990. The son of an English teacher and social services counselor, Hemsworth has two older brother, Chris and Luke, both of whom also went onto become actors. While in eighth grade, Hemsworth moved with his family to Phillip Island, Victoria. While attending high school there, Hemsworth became inspired to pursue an acting career. He saw the success that both of his brothers were having as actors, so he decided to follow their paths. Hemsworth tried out for many school plays, and his love for acting flowed from there.

Before entering the acting industry, Hemsworth worked as a floor layer for six months. After leaving high school, Hemsworth hired an agent to handle all his appointments for casting roles. At the tender age of 16, he received his first audition. The following year, Hemsworth was cast in guest roles on the famed Australian drama shows "Home and Away" and "McLeod's Daughters." Later in 2007, Hemsworth was cast as a recurring character on "Neighbours," the same show his older brother Luke previously starred on. At the same time, Hemsworth played the role of a guitarist on "The Elephant Princess," a children's television show.

In March of 2009, Hemsworth relocated to the United States to further his budding acting career. When he first arrived, Liam stayed with his older brother Chris's manager, William Ward. Hemsworth immediately found a couple of brief film roles in "Triangle" and "Knowing." That same year, he was chosen to star opposite Sylvester Stallone in the 2010 hit film "The Expendables." However, not long after being cast in the role, Hemsworth's character was written out of the script entirely. This disappointment didn't last long though—only a few hours after being dropped from Stallone's project, Hemsworth was offered an audition for the lead role in "Thor." Liam was eventually passed over for the role, which was given to his older brother Chris.

Hemsworth finally experienced an upturn in his acting fortunes (as well as his personal life as it would later turn out) when he was cast as the co-lead role of Will Blakelee in "The Last Song." In the film, Hemsworth played the love interest of Miley Cyrus's character Ronnie Miller. The two would enter into a relationship off screen as well not long after production began filming. A couple of months later, Hemsworth appeared in a music video for Miley Cyrus's song "When I Look at You." The two quickly became the darling young couple of Hollywood, with the paparazzi eager to take snaps of the pair out and about.

In March 2010, Hemsworth was included on a list of The Next Generation of Hollywood's Leading Men by "Details" magazine. This further established his claim as one of the leading lights of the acting scene. That same month, "The Last Song" was released to theaters worldwide, and Hemworth's performance was positively received by many film critics. Hemsworth was nominated and won many awards for his role in this film, including being named "Young Hollywood Breakthrough of the Year" and "Male Breakout" at the Teen Choice Awards.

Although Hemsworth's professional career was flourishing, his personal life took a small hit when he and Cyrus broke off their relationship in August of 2010. However, the split did not last long—only one month later the two were seen out frequently together as a couple. In April of 2011, Hemsworth was announced as one of the lead characters in the eagerly anticipated film "The Hunger Games." A few months later, he was also cast in "Love and Honor" alongside Aimee Teegarden and Teresa Palmer. "The Hunger Games" proved to be a huge global success, taking in close to $700 million in revenue worldwide. Hemsworth was widely praised for his role of Gale Hawthorne.

In the summer of 2012, Hemsworth and Cyrus became engaged. However, in September of 2013, the couple announced that they had split up for the third and perhaps final time. Hemsworth has since been linked to actresses January Jones and Eiza Gonzalez.

In November of 2013, Hemsworth is due to reprise his role of Gale in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Based on the resounding success of the first film, much is expected of the follow-up. Hemsworth is currently involved in production for a 2014 hit thriller, "Cut Bank," where he will star alongside Billy Bob Thornton and John Malkovich. With a bright future ahead for Liam Hemsworth, there is no telling where his acting career will take him next.
