Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

Despite winter storms across the country, "Identity Thief" managed to land top spot at the box office with earnings of $36,593,000. Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy team up in this clever comedy about an unlikely criminal and the man she targets. Sandy has never liked his unusual name, but at least it helps him track down the woman who stole his identity. Although the thief may look unassuming, Sandy ends up in a complicated and hilarious struggle to make his life his own again. The R rating is due to language and mature content.

"Side Effects" brought in $10,015,000 during its debut weekend. The eerie and suspenseful thriller follows Emily, a young New York woman who is trying to find relief from the anxiety that plagues her life and threatens her happy marriage. She finally seeks the help of a psychiatrist, who hands her a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication. Although the drug seems like a lifesaver, it soon becomes clear that it comes at the cost of a human life. The movie has an R rating for mature content, nudity, violence, and language

During the weekend of February 8, "Warm Bodies" earned $11,500,000 in box office proceeds, bringing total earnings to over $36 million. R feels resigned to his life as a zombie, or rather, his lack of a life. When he eats the brain of a young man and experiences deepening romantic feelings for the victim's girlfriend, everything begins to change. Language and zombie violence contribute to the movie's PG-13 rating.

"Silver Linings Playbook" has made more than $90 million since its opening, including $6,908,000 this past weekend. When Tiffany meets Pat, they both want something. Pat wants to connect with his ex-wife, while Tiffany just wants a partner for an upcoming dance competition. The two agree to help each other out, but they may end up with more than they bargained for. The R rating is due to nudity, language, and mature content.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" brought in $5,750,000, with total earnings of more than $43 million. After managing to outmaneuver an evil witch, two siblings grow up to become skilled bounty hunters. Witches everywhere fear the duo, but there is one powerful witch who can still give them a run for their money. The film is rated R due to nudity, language, mature content, and violence and gore.

"Mama" saw weekend earnings of $4,323,000. Overall, the film has made more than $64 million. After Lucas experiences a mysterious accident, Annabel has to take care of his two young nieces by herself. In addition to helping the girls acclimate to normal life after a past trauma, Annabel also has to deal with a growing supernatural threat. The eerie horror film earned its PG-13 rating for violence, terror, disturbing images, and thematic elements.

Movies to DVD

"Skyfall" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, February 12. The twenty-third Bond film stars Daniel Craig as the tough and enigmatic secret agent. When his loyal friend and colleague, M, faces pressures from both MI6 and outside forces, Bond comes to her aid. However, the move may prove disastrous for both of them. "Skyfall" has a PG-13 rating for language, smoking, mature content, and intense violence throughout.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" follows Charlie, a reserved teenager who worries about his failure to fit in with his peers. When he meets two free-spirited students, Charlie's life starts to turn around. However, his past may still catch up with him. The film has a PG-13 rating for thematic material, a fight, mature content and references, and drug and alcohol use, all involving teens.

In "The Sessions," a man who has spent his entire life in an iron lung decides to experience more of what life has to offer. The first step is losing his virginity, meaning that he must draw on the services of a surrogate. The provocative film has an R rating for mature content, including frank references and graphic nudity.

"The Man with the Iron Fists" stars RZA as a village blacksmith for an unusual town. He makes deadly weapons to arm the townspeople. When outside forces show up with greedy intentions, they will face more of a challenge than they expected. The film's R rating is due to strong violence, mature content, brief drug use, and language.

"Silent Hill: Revelation" is available to rent or own on February 12. For her entire life, Heather has been trying to outrun a mysterious threat. Her father tries to protect Heather from her frightening past, but if Heather wants to find true freedom, she may have to venture into the dark and hostile world of Silent Hill. "Silent Hill; Revelation" has an R for disturbing images, violence, language, and brief nudity.
