The Hottest Female Actors of 2013

When film fans look back on 2013, they will remember it as the year of the woman. Though comic book films, including "Man of Steel" and "Iron Man 3," took some of the top spots at the box office, fans couldn't stop talking about some of the female actors who appeared in the top films. Whether they headlined a new film or served as a supporting character, the following five women were the hottest actresses of the year.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence started out 2013 on a good note. After picking up several awards and nominations for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook," she found herself attending the Academy Awards. Though she split many of the wins with "Zero Dark Thirty" star Jessica Chastain, Lawrence walked away with the coveted golden trophy. Lawrence will round out the year with a starring role in the much-anticipated film "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." While "Thor: Dark World" dominated at the box office, many expect to see this film knock it from the top spot and make even more money.

Amy Adams

Amy Adams can play roles in sweet and wholesome romantic comedies as well as she can tackle roles in dark dramas. The young actress received three Oscar nominations for her work in "Junebug," "Doubt," and "The Fighter," and she received her fourth nomination this year for her role in "The Master." Though she lost the award to Anne Hathaway, she beat that actress at the box office. Adams starred in "Man of Steel" as the loveable journalist Lois Lane. The film, which grossed nearly $300 million in the United States alone, cemented her as a star. She also found her name on the lips of many when a studio announced a planned sequel to her hit film "Enchanted." Next up for Adams is a role in "Batman vs. Superman."

Sandra Bullock

Best known for her roles in romantic comedies, Bullock changed the way people thought about her skills with an award-winning role in "The Blind Side." After winning the trophy, the actress decided to take some time off to focus on raising her son, but when it came to 2013 films, she made some smart decisions. Bullock started the year with a role in "The Heat" as a tough FBI agent. The film grossed more than $150 million in the United States, which set a record for an R-rated film with female actors in the lead roles. The studio recently announced plans for a sequel to that film. Bullock ended the year with a turn in "Gravity." Starring alongside good friend George Clooney, the film told the story of two people lost in space. Many expect Bullock to pick up an Oscar nomination for her role.

Jennifer Aniston

Though she found success on television, Jennifer Aniston hasn't found the same success when it comes to the films. That all changed when she took on a starring role in the 2013 film "We're the Millers." Playing a stripper who agrees to pose as a man's wife to help him smuggle drugs across the border, she walked away as the star of the film. Though "We're the Millers" didn't gross as much at the box office as "The Heat," it did remind people of her fantastic comedic talent. Viewers loved talking about how great she looked in the film and how she pulled attention away from "Saturday Night Live" star Jason Sudeikis. Aniston has three films set for release next year, including the sequel to her hit film "Horrible Bosses."

Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy is one of the few stars who can transition effortlessly between television and film. While starring on her hit comedy "Mike & Molly," she found time to star in three of the biggest grossing films of the year. She started out 2013 playing a thief with a heart of gold in "Identify Thief," which paired her with Jason Bateman ("Arrested Development") and grossed more than $130 million at the box office. She then took on a supporting role in "The Hangover III," and some reviews say she stole the film away from the stars. McCarthy finished out the year starring with Sandra Bullock in "The Heat" and completing the last season of her television show. If anyone dominated 2013, it was McCarthy.

This past year saw a large number of films land at the box office, and those films grossed hundreds of thousands of dollars. While some focused on male casts, a handful of female actors had the chance to shine. McCarthy, Bullock, Aniston, Lawrence, and Adams walked away as some of the hottest female stars of the year.
