Brendan Gleeson unsure of how to play Pirates character

March 30th, 2012

Brendan Gleeson had no idea of how to play his 'Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists' character.

The 57-year-old Irish actor lends his voice to the part of The Pirate With Gout in the animated movie, but he admits his pretentious alter-ego was never supposed to be from the Emerald Isle.

He said: ''I had no notion of what to do with him at all. He wasn't meant to be Irish. If you feel there's an Irish stereotype thing going on, I think when you go into a cartoon, you can forget about all that sort of stuff.

''I like that he was quite pretentious. He's one of those blokes who is a mixture of total innocence and complete arrogance...''

Brendan jumped at the chance to work on the movie - which stars Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven and Martin Freeman - devised by 'Wallace & Gromit' creators Aardman Animation because he is such a big fan of the animated short film series.

He added to movies.ie: ''It was a very interesting experience. 'Wallace & Gromit' is one of my all-time favourite creations, so, I didn't need to be asked twice, you know.''
