Amy Adams was''surprised'' how much fun she had on the set of 'The Master'.

The 38-year-old actress was shocked at how comical director Paul Thomas Anderson was while shooting the drama and she enjoyed the jovial atmosphere between the helmer and the rest of the cast, which features Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

She said: ''I was surprised how funny he was, I was expecting it to be a very serious set. It was very intense and very focused, but Paul also has a fantastic sense of humour, a very, very funny sensibility.''

The motion picture tells the story of a World War II veteran (Phoenix) who arrives home unsettled and uncertain of his future and he ends up growing close to a philosophical movement entitled 'The Cause' and takes a trip with his leader (Hoffman) along the East Coast of the US to spread its teachings.

Amy admits she didn't find out much about Paul before starting work on the motion picture because likes to ''go for the ride'' and learn on the job.

She added to Digital Spy: ''When I work with a director I really like to just go for the ride and get to know their techniques and their process. I really try not to overthink it, but allow myself to be swept up in it.''
