Keeping Up with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez

-- Many songs and movies have been written about young love, but few of those narratives take place in the spotlight like the romance of Justin Bieber, 18, and Selena Gomez, 20. The two young stars have been in the public eye for years now, as both were child stars. Beiber became a singing sensation as a teenager, while Gomez acted on the Disney show "The Wizards of Waverly Place," with many hailing her the next Miley Cyrus as she crossed over into music and movies. With that kind of pedigree, it is easy to see why people wanted to find out about their relationship status. The pair finally went public with their romance in early 2011, which caused a whole new wave of curiosity about their relationship.

One of the reasons this romance endured in the minds of tabloid readers was that there was some uncertainty surrounding its existence. The two tried to keep their romance under wraps throughout months of rumors. When celebrities as well-known as these two try to be secretive, the entertainment media, as well as fans, tend to get whipped into a frenzy. Therefore, the longer the two denied they were a couple, the more the media became hooked on the story.

Once they went public, the picture perfect couple began walking red carpets together at events, dressed to the nines. The couple was photographed in candid moments, such as a vacation they took to the beach, where they displayed their affection for each other openly.

Unfortunately, the good times were headed for an end. Rumors began to circulate that they were spending too much time apart, as Gomez was often filming movies, and Bieber was on the road in support of his albums. He embarked on a world tour that put him on the other side of the globe from Gomez, who was often stuck in Los Angeles because of film work.

The stress of constantly being apart and the jealousy of Gomez over Beiber's flirtatiousness are reportedly reasons why the couple broke up in November 2012. Long distance romances can work, but there usually has to be an end to the constant separation for the relationship to ultimately succeed. In the case of Bieber and Gomez, there was no end in sight because they were constantly taking on new projects. In addition, Bieber has a reputation for being flirty around some of the beautiful women to whom he is introduced, which reportedly made Gomez jealous.

The couple tried to reconcile just a week later over dinner, but got into a very public spat and left in separate cars. Bieber allegedly showed up at Gomez's house to make one last effort to work things out, but she would not even let him inside the gate. The romance is reportedly off, although it remains to be seen whether the two will get back together, especially since they have allegedly broken up a number of times before this last public split.

In the meantime, neither one is taking time to mourn the end of the relationship. Bieber continues to tour and make appearances on television shows such as "Dancing with the Stars." He has made a few appearances on television shows such as "Law and Order: SVU," and may do additional acting in the future. Right now, however, he is focusing on his music.

Gomez is doing just the opposite of Bieber now that she has extra time on her hands. After her stint on various Disney shows, she started recording music and even had a platinum hit, "I Love You Like a Love Song." However, in 2012 she announced that her band would take a long hiatus so that she could focus on her growing film career. She is currently filming a "Wizards of Waverly Place" TV movie that is sure to please her Disney fans.

In addition, Gomez is starring in more adult fare for the big screen, and is also taking some risks. The first is a small role in "Aftershock," a gory film written by horror master Eli Roth. She will also take the lead in "Behaving Badly," where she reportedly has a hot love scene that is a far cry from her previous screen work. Finally, she is starring opposite Ethan Hawke in the crime thriller "Getaway." These are the types of roles that young starlets like Gomez take to try and shed their squeaky clean image, much in the same way that she apparently shed Bieber.
