Memphis-bound Zac Efron?

August 20th, 2010

Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are going head-to-head for a role in 'Memphis'.

The 'Charlie St. Cloud' actor and the 'Social Network' star are both reportedly looking to take a starring role in the movie, which will be an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name.

Both of the actors have been seen watching the show in New York, and both have expressed interest in playing radio DJ Huey Calhoun, the New York Post reports.

According to the publication, Zac told girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens and 'Hairspray' director Adam Shankman he "can't stay away from the show".

Oliver Stone is set to direct the project, with his representative confirming he has met with one of the show's writers, David Bryan from Bon Jovi, about the movie.

It is believed Stone prefers the idea of Memphis-born Timberlake taking the lead role.

Zac has previously admitted he wants to step away from musicals and focus on other projects after taking leading roles in both 'High School Musical' and 'Hairspray'.

He said: "What do the fans want to see? I could do another musical. I could stick to my guns and try to do more of that. Try and do another cool musical and try to stick with that genre. Is that really what the fans want to see? I mean everyone is like, 'How can you make that transition? How are you going to get the fans to follow you into this new kind of stuff?'

"The only way that I know how to do that is to stay a little bit ahead of the audience."
