Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo star in this critically acclaimed comedy that was co-written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko. Nic (Bening) and Jules (Moore) are a married lesbian couple living in California. Nic has an 18-year-old daughter (played by Mia Wasikowska) while Jules has a 15-year-old son (Josh Hutcherson). Both children were conceived via artificial insemination using the same sperm donor. The teenagers discover that their biological father was a man named Paul (Ruffalo), locate him and invite him to meet their two moms. This goes well at first, but eventually leads to complications.
