Killer Movie Blu-ray Review

Reality TV producer Seaton Brookstone (Nestor Carbonell) is unprepared for “reality” when his shooting crew finds himself in the remote northern town of White Plains with a killer on the loose.  This is the set up of the October 13th Blu-ray release of Killer Movie, a Phase 4 Films production written and directed by Jeff Fisher.

Over the course of this dark comedy horror film, past suspicions, betrayals and secrets play out as a never ending nightmare of a reality show takes grip of new director Jake Tanner’s (Paul Wesley) crew and also threatens the life of his star Hollywood celebrity Blanca Champion (Kaley Cuoco).

Killer Movie is an odd slasher film that is at times your typical gory “killer movie”, yet it is intentionally offbeat with interviews of the reality show characters throughout the story.  It is an eclectic horror comedy blend of docucomedies Scary Movie and Drop Dead Gorgeous.  A mysterious killer with a mask is on the loose, gruesomely killing all of the cast and stars of the show.

The challenge with Killer Movie is identifying what type of film audience this flick would appeal to.  It is a little too serious at times to be compared strictly to the horror comedy spoof Scary Movie.  Yet it offers all of the same comedy bits and interviews that made Drop Dead Gorgeous a unique, clever, and entertaining comedy.  Unfortunately, it didn’t quite create the perfect amalgim of horror and comedy.

There are parts of Killer Movie that work as a slasher film based on jump scenes and intense thriller moments.  There are some humor high points during the interview bits and other scenes.  However, the total package is hard to place as an entire movie.  Effective and solid cinematography help give the movie a good feel that somewhat offsets the uncertain plot and story development.
