Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise couldn't be discouraged from performing their own stunts in 'Knight and Day'.

The film's director James Mangold has revealed the duo - who collaborated for the second time in the action thriller, after starring in 2001 hit 'Vanilla Sky' -were determined to do their own stunts, but he would have been "happier" if they had enlisted the help of professionals.

Speaking at the UK premiere of 'Knight and Day at London's Odeon Leicester Square, he told BANG Showbiz: "I couldn't discourage them from doing any of their own stunts. I would have been happier if they hadn't done some of them, but they just love getting in there physically and representing their characters in that way.

"Hell yes, I was worried but they were both incredibly prepared for it and focused on safety. That's the great thing about Cameron and Tom - people have been wanting to see them in these sorts of roles for some time."

James - who won Oscars for directing 'Girl, Interrupted' in 1999 and 2005's 'Walk The Line' - admitted working with Cameron and Tom was a "great thrill".

He said: "Directing them was one of the great thrills in my career - they're both great actors and great quality people, a joy to be with and a joy to work with. I couldn't think of two better souls to make a movie with."
