Joe Carnahan has begun work on 'Nemesis'.

The director has revealed he is in the process of adapting Mark Millar's comic book series with the help of his brother Matthew and is busy penning a ''beast'' of a script.

He tweeted: ''My brother and I have begun 'Nemesis'... This script is gonna be a beast'', later adding: ''With 'Nemesis' Matt & I are gunning for TDK [The Dark Knight] trilogy with the thought that, if you're going after the world record holder, what's the point?''

The Marvel comic tells the story of police chief Blake Morrow who becomes the target of a supervillain. Liam Neeson - who starred in Joe's latest film 'The Grey' - was previously linked to the lead role and Joe is also attached to direct the project.

The filmmaker recently dropped out of a 'Daredevil' reboot after Marvel refused to allow Fox more time to keep the rights, and when probed as to whether his involvement was definitely over, Joe remained coy.

He replied: ''Don't know. No idea how Marvel is going to play that property now. With @mrmarkmillar running that stuff at Fox we had a shot.''

Mark Miller's comic books are proving popular as film adaptations, with 'Kick-Ass 2' due out next year and Matthew Vaughn working on 'The Secret Service'.
