Putting together a list of scary movies can be a very daunting task simply because the word scary can mean different things to different people. While horror movies come in all shapes and sizes, movies that are scary leave a lingering effect on the viewer. They keep you up late at night, give you nightmares, and leave you with an all-round sense of fright for days or weeks.
Rather than attempt to tackle the overwhelming challenge of trying to build an all-time list of scary movies, this feature addresses the top 10 scariest movies of 2009 (to date) on DVD and Blu-ray. Before sharing the films with you, here are some criteria so that you have an understanding of why movies are included or excluded.
In order to be considered for this best scary movies list, the film had to be released on DVD or Blu-ray for the first time during 2009 as of the date of this writing. The movies had to possess a combination of traits including: A level of general scariness or fright, lasting effect, uniqueness, and jumpiness. While a movie on the list might not be as strong in one of these areas, it might be a good fit based on the all-around combination of factors.
Finally, to be included in this look at the best scary movies of 2009, the film must have been reviewed by Movie Room Reviews (with a grade of B- or higher) to ensure a first-hand experience with the movie. Here is a selection of 10 great scary films of 2009 including a link to the review!
10. B.T.K. – Though some question the authenticity of the story compared to the real life events, this chilling fictional account of one of the most infamous serial killers of modern times definitely stays with you for a while.
9. Elsewhere – This movie is chilling because it establishes a scenario in which the viewer does not know what has happened to the main victim in the story. It offers danger, the use of technology to create fright, and several chases in the darkness.
8. Night Train – With a nice cast that includes Danny Glover, Steve Zahn, and Leelee Sobieski, this very unique fantasy, adventure movie is chilling in its own right. It doesn’t deliver a lot of jump scenes, but it plays out a story of greed and murder all thanks to a magical box with mystical power. Part of the creepiness is the fact that the whole movie is shot on a train in the dark.
7. Sam’s Lake – A horror story with lots of gore, this movie is shot in Canada and is not only scary, it offers a story of “protection, unconditional love, and betrayal”.
6. Ghosts of Goldfield – What would a list of scary movies be without a token “ghost story”. This film features a nice cast, including Kellen Lutz of the Twilight movie. It offers murder, ghosts, and suspense.
5. The Haunting of Molly Hartley – Though some might find the conclusion of this film to be disappointing, the story is truly haunting and chilling, with an intriguing climax that makes it worth the watch.
4. The Unborn – With one of the stronger spiritual themes on the list of scary movies, The Unborn is chilling, suspenseful, and delivers plenty of jumpy moments if that is what gets you excited. Even with a plot that is a bit sketchy, this movie is well-made and leaves an impact.
3. The Devil’s Ground – Although the writer attempts to make more of the plot that is necessary, this movie is truly among the more scary films on the list. Much of the movie involves frightening chases through the woods as a group of friends are hunted by a ruthless killer.
2. The Haunting in Connecticut – Sometimes, scary films lose their luster because the trailer presents the scariest moments in the movie. With this movie, there is plenty of fright and chills from beginning to end. The movie has supernatural elements, jumpy moments, and a dark story under the surface that makes it a good movie as well as a frightening experience.
1. The Uninvited – Likely the most known movie on the list of best scary movies, The Uninvited is well-made, compelling, terrifying, and suspenseful. The plot keeps you engaged until the end, which is sure to catch most viewers off guard. There are also some great scary moments that make you jump.
Undoubtedly, there are great scary movies not include in this top 10 list of scary movies on DVD and Blu-ray during 2009. There are also certainly going to be some more great scary films released later in the year. If you have movies that you would like to share with other fans of fright, add a comment and let us know the movie and whey it is scary.
