Weekend Wrap-Up: What Happened at the Box Office?
"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" beat out Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic for first spot in the box office rankings. The family-friendly movie earned over $60 million domestically, proving that the animal kingdom has what it takes to defeat the competition. Gloria, Melman, Alex and Marty are more than ready to leave Europe behind and return to the comforts of the Central Park Zoo. If they want to make their way across Europe undetected, they will have to swallow their pride and join a traveling circus. The film has a PG-13 rating for mild action sequences and some crude humor.
"Prometheus" earned $50 million during its debut weekend, landing the film in second place. "Prometheus" is an indirect part of the popular "Alien" series. A group of scientists and explorers travels to the strangest reaches of the known universe, where they discover unsettling secrets about the very origins of human life. They also learn that the continuing fate of the human race rests in their hands. The movie has an R rating for brief language, intense images and extreme sci-fi violence.

"Snow White and the Huntsman" made over $23 million during its second weekend, bringing total earnings up to $98,499,500. In this dark and edgy twist on an age-old fairy tale, Snow White becomes a fierce warrior who is more than capable of defending herself against her evil stepmother. Chris Hemsworth stars as the huntsman. The fantasy action movie is rated PG-13 for brief suggestive content and intense violence and action sequences.
"Men in Black III" earned $13,500,000 over the weekend, with total earnings of over $135 million. Agent K and Agent J have to join forces to get rid of an extraterrestrial threat. The problem is that Agent J will have to travel back in time if he wants to save the world. "Men in Black III" has a PG-13 rating for sci-fi action violence and brief suggestive content.
"Marvel's The Avengers" pulled in over $10 million during the weekend of June 8th. All in all, the film has earned an impressive $571 million since its debut. Six of the world's most brave and talented superheroes have to join forces to fight against Loki and his army of sinister aliens. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to a brief drug reference and intense sci-fi action sequences.
"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" held steady in the ranks, earning $3,235,000 and reaching an overall gross of over $31 million. A glamorous and upscale hotel in India seems like the perfect place to retire. However, a group of British retirees is in for some culture shock when they actually arrive. They have to adjust their expectations before they can truly appreciate the Marigold Hotel. The film has a PG-13 rating for language and mature content.
"What to Expect When You're Expecting" brought in $2,710,000. The overall earnings now amount to over $35 million. The movie is based on the popular pregnancy how-to book of the same name. Five different couples have to learn how to prepare for pregnancy and parenthood, but they are all surprised by the challenges they encounter. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is rated PG-13 for some crude content, language and thematic elements.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law team up yet again as the world's most beloved detective duo. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" is available on DVD this Tuesday, June 12th. The impulsive, eccentric detective and his patient sidekick, Watson, are trying to avoid trouble, but trouble seems to find them too easily. A mysterious mastermind has been committing acts of terrorism, apparently hoping to spark a world war. Holmes and Watson may be the only forces standing between the evil genius and total mayhem. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" has a PG-13 rating for drug references and intense violence and action sequences.
"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" is a fun and fast-paced action flick. Nicolas Cage reprises his role as the Johnny Blaze, a daredevil motorcyclist who trades his mortal soul for supernatural powers. Blaze struggles with his role as the devil's bounty hunter, fighting to regain his lost humanity. He finally has a chance to break the curse when a secret cult contacts the Ghost Rider, hoping to save the life of a young boy who is part of the devil's nefarious plans. The PG-13 rating is due to intense violence and action, language and disturbing imagery.
