Mary Poppins: 45th Anniversary Edition DVD Review

If one movie has the power to rekindle childhood enthusiasm in adults while simultaneously entertaining a new generation of young people, it would have to be Mary Poppins. One of the most beloved Disney classic’s of all-time, Mary Poppins tells the story of the nanny that set the bar in childcare long before “Super Nanny” came about. Julie Andews stars in the special disc-set Mary Poppins: 45th Anniversary Edition DVD.

Available on DVD January 27th from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Mary Poppins: The 45th Anniversary takes the classic story and makes it better through digital mastering. Mary Poppins is “practically perfect” and the firm but fun caretaker answers the call (or ad) of the Banks family to tend to young Jane and Michael (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber). The two young children need someone with a firm hand, but a loving and carefree spirit. Mary Poppins, with her upbeat song style and personality, combined with her pinch of supernatural, is the perfect fit.

Mary Poppins was one of the most pleasant movie experiences I had as a kid, and it was great fun to see that classic story enhanced with today’s digital technology. The picture quality was astounding. The colors and visual elements that help make the story what it is, are tremendously impressive. Add the modern-day technology touch to the fun story and wonderful music (“Spoon Full of Sugar” and “Step in Time” for instance), and Mary Poppins is truly fun for the whole family.

Julie Andrews is wonderful and her beauty and charm are much more apparent in the picturesque anniversary special. Dick Van Dyke is also fun as the singing chimney sweep who matches Mary’s glee. It is fun to see him as a young man full of spirit. Disney has done a nice job putting together this 45th Anniversary DVD to celebrate this winner of 5 Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Julie Andrews).
