Scarlett Johansson will make her directorial debut with 'Summer Crossing'.

The 'Avengers' actress has chosen the big screen indie adaptation of the Truman Capote novel - which tells the story of teenage girl in post-World War II New York who breaks free from her rich family and discovers her own identity and sexuality - for her first turn behind the director's lens.

The novel - which was initially written in 1943 but was only published posthumously in 2005 - tells how the young woman jeopardises her social standing when she embarks on a torrid affair with a parking attendant and then marries him and becomes pregnant. New York playwright, Tristine Skyler has written the screenplay while Oscar-winning producer Barry Spikings and executive producer Peter D. Graves will collaborate with Truman Capote Literary Trust trustee Alan Schwartz on the project.

There is no word as to a planned production start date yet.

Scarlett will next be seen in Cameron Crowe's comedy drama 'We Bought A Zoo' with Matt Damon before reprising her role as the Black Widow in superhero blockbuster 'The Avengers'.
